Pastel Het Clown.....???

ArtInScales Aug 06, 2010 03:01 PM

Our Clown to Pastel clutch hatched the other day and they are all out now. When we first cut the eggs I thought we had 3 pastels and 1 normal. Once they all came out I wasn't sure what I had. I did know I only had 1 pastel, but why does he have a bald head and why are 2 of the hets lighter than the other one?

I bought my male clown from Michael Cole in late 2008. I called him Wednesday to ask what was up with the pastel and why are some of the babies lighter. He told me that he bought his het pair from Jeremy Stone in 2002. Michael thought he had some weird co dom thing going on with them because some came out lighter than others. Then Michael hit on the hypo clown and called it the candy clown because he didn't know what was going on with the lighter snakes. Jeremy proved the hypo clown the same year, so Michael talked to him about the project and found out some of the hets Jeremy sold in 2002 were poss het for hypo, so Michael actually beat Jeremy on his project.

Evidentially my clown is het ghost and it looks like the babies are visual hets.

Here's a pic of the clutch. The one on the right is the darker female. The one on top had just came out and looks orange in the pic for some reason.

Here's a shot of the pastel.

Here's the pastel next to a vanilla pastel we produced earlier this year.

Here's a pic of our breeder male clown with the pastel baby.

ive been theorizing that orange ghosts are actually just a very very weak co-dom for while now. ive got a few hets and they are very visually different from normals. altho i think some peoples het ghosts look like normals too. perhaps its a certain line(s) that show more of a distinction in het form.

I've been thinking about this too. Maybe ours showed up because of the clown gene.

Thanks Kyle. We're stoked. I was wanting to get the ghost gene into the clown, now step 1 is done.
