underweight??

noori Sep 24, 2003 04:26 PM

How much should an adult male Russian weigh? Mine is about four and a half inches long and weighs 388 grams. I read somewhere that one should be around 500, or does it really just depend on the size of the tortoise itself?

Yes it does depend on the shell size. And to some extent on shell shape. Flatter russians I've had are lighter, more highly domed ones are heavier.

I had one small male russian that was around 400 grams (varied by season) at a shell length of 4.5"

I have another male russian who weighs around 550 grams at 5.25".

Two females are 1000grams/6.25" and 1150 grams/6.9". And all varying with the season.

I also have a 16 month old russian (gender unknown) who weighs about 230 grams at 4". He's very sturdy but not as highly domed as the adults.
