Striped Gene in P. catinifer recessive?

Grey_Owl Aug 06, 2010 09:00 PM

Is the striped trait in Pacific gopher snakes normally recessive?

The reason I ask is that I bred a W/C male from Sonoma County to a normal female from San Joaquin County, a region without a striped population.

Currently hatching are 3 normals and 4 Striped.

Could this be a new form of the striped trait being co-dom? Or, was this always the case? I wasn't expecting to get any striped animals from this pairing, so it was a nice surprise.

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

Here are a couple of photos. If, the trait is dominant, as you said, then that answers my question. I'd always thought this was a recessive trait though, anyone else?

Yes the stripe morph in pacific gopher snakes is co-dom. What happened in your case is typical and awesome btw

Thanks for the pictures. Those are really cool. I like the co dom trait because you don't have to wait.

I've heard previously that it was dominant, but I've never tried breeding them myself to be sure.

Grey Owl,

This topic occasionally surfaces here and there is no general agreement yet. Here is a link to the most recent discussion on the striped phase Pacific gopher...

I know Jason Nelson has told me in the past that the striped gene in catenifer is co-dom and the striped gene in annectans in simple recessive...

The striped gene is definitely dominant in catenifer. I have bred several of these going back 20 years. I have never seen anything to suggest it was co-dom, just variable in its manifestation, ie not all stripes are created equal. I will post some pics soon of some stripes and albinos produced this year.
