Help with handling hatchlings

imbones1 Aug 08, 2010 06:15 PM

I've had a ball python before, but I got it at the pet store. I must have not realized how much older and how important this was when I got him. I was NEVER struck at. I just got about a 2 week old hatchling, WHOAH is he ever a nervous snipper. Now I'm thinking what I'll do is get some work gloves, that will give me some protection and confidence to just grab the thing, getting it used to interaction. Or do you just suggest that I leave it alone except feeding it for a couple of months?

ive got a hatchling that does that to me too. lol none of my other snakes bite at me. but its only when i take her out of her tub, so i think she might just be scared that im a predator or something. after ive had her out for a few seconds she just chills with me. so i think it might just think your a predator trying to eat it when you reach in the cage to get it out.

I prefer nippy babies, they make for better feeders. Let yourself get bit a few times till you realize it really doesn't hurt to get bit by one that young, then once you become more relaxed the baby will relax more too. The more you hesitate and are afraid of it the more nervous the baby will be with you. Here is a little video of my Mojo girl when I got her, she'd strike and bite non stop when I got her, was a great eater, and is now a total sweetie pie. I just let her bite me as a baby and eventually she stopped doing it. The video looks like I'm shoving the camera in her face but I was zoomed in and was farther away from her than it looks. Good luck with your new baby. I'm sure you guys will be best buds in no time

Well said! Mine hasn't actually bitten me yet. I'm not scared of her she is young. But I do find that the girls I have they all pretty much hiss at me when I go to take them out their tubs, none of my males have ever hissed at me I find it kind of weird. But its whatever. Only the hatchling has ever striked at me. Never made contact but that's it.

Every day handleing!
Theyre little jaws dont hurt much.
In a few days he will be just fine.
I had a little hatching that I bought about 2 months ago and he was very flighty and aggresive, but now he is tame as can be!
Hope this helps!

most babies in my experience tend to be a little nippy at first...eventually most of them calm down and get used to being handled
