Breeding western hognoses

sorazme Aug 09, 2010 05:38 PM

Hello, i normally don't post but i was wondering how to go about this. I have two w. hognoses, but i'm not sure of the sexes yet. So how big do they need to be to breed(length and weight)? And any other info on how to breed them would be greatly appreciated, because they are neat snakes and i hope to work with them more.

You can also click on the ad above your post for ExtremeHogs and go to Justin's care sheet. It also has exceptional information.

Thanks, i looked at both sites and they both offered great information, but just one last question. How old are the snakes generally, when they reach breeding size?(250g for females, above 60g for males)

ademar Aug 10, 2010 08:31 AM

Female - 250 grams minimum, 300 grams recomended. Male 10 month old.

Answer on question like this and other You can find here:

When it comes to reptiles, the breeding age is not important... As long as the female is in proper condition for breeding and is ovulating, she is good to go... I have a female that bred at 14 months old... That is much younger than the "recomended breeding age"... She double clutched for me flawlessly...

I got ripped apart on a UK site for breeding her at that age and everyone told me how she would become eggbound and die or lay all slugs... LOL... I guess what I am getting at is I generally do not believe in rules of thumb when it comes to keeping reptiles... They are usually very general and are bits of unfounded, regurgitated information that can be applied to a dozen other species...

haha, thanks. Next step for me is to get my two hognoses probed and hope i got a pair.

Don't bother probing them. Hognose can't be visually sexed easily. Just post a picture of the undersides of their tails and we will sex them for you no problem.

Hogs are sexually dimorphic and the sexes can be easily told apart... No need for probing...

Here are the pics. There are 4 photos, 2 pics of each snake and i labeled them as hognose #1 and #2 just so you don't mix them up.

Number 2 is a male for sure, but I am having trouble with number 1. I can't quite tell where the vent is on the shot from below. Can you take a pic of both of their tails next to each other with their vents aligned? Take the pic from below with their tails as straight as possible.

Looks like 2 males to me...

Jon R Aug 10, 2010 11:36 PM

Yup. All I had was my phone to look at the pics today. Just looked at them on my computer and it looks like you have two males.
