This one is a KEEPER

SlytherLyn Aug 09, 2010 09:08 PM

This is by far the best baby of the clutch. I don't have a clue what he (she?) is but I'm keeping him for sure. He has a diffused belly. Has dark eyes that look black but photograph red but definitely not albino eyes. You can't tell the pupil apart from the iris. I'd love any suggestions. I'll post pics as he grows for sure.

Clutch results:
7 Normals
3 Anerys
2 Blizzards
2 Granites
2 Hypos
2 Albinos
1 Fire
1 Charcoal
1 Diffused
1 Mystery Baby

Here are pics of my Keeper Mystery Baby

I think that is probably a diffused "phantom"(hypo x charcoal x diffused)

and a possible het for the other traits to boot!

Very cool!.........yes, just as I thought, the deep ruby/purplish eyes too!..LOL!

Yeah, I'd bet money any day it's a diffused "phantom". The diffused head and belly pattern, and the subdued coloration all point to it being one. Your combined genetic traits from both parents make this very probable.

Very nice indeed!

Could also just be a Phantom - babies from a single blood red parent(so just "het" blood) can display varying degrees of diffused belly without ever having diffusion elsewhere. The one in the pic doesn't seem to have much diffusion on the sides, although sometimes they will really change a lot after the first shed and it will become apparent.

ShaunRoberson Aug 11, 2010 08:39 PM

This is a het blood red clutch from'07 and as you can see they range from normal bellies, to slightly reduced checkering, to nearly blood red level diffusion. I kept the one on the left in the pic of the 2 and his belly is nearly all orange now. The 2 females of this bredding I held back have pretty normal bellies. I had a female that had greatly reduced checkering too, but traded her a few months ago.

PS Pituophis

DMong Aug 11, 2010 09:00 PM

Yeah, I definitely understand what you are saying there, and also noticed what you did about the sides of the animal not being as greatly reduced as some other diffused animal's are known to display.

Now those phantoms can tend to show a pretty fair amount of greatly reduced head chevroning too from what I have seen, but not always, but it seems that particular animal has a pretty over the top reduction with it's head pattern. That was another reason it could very likely be a diffused animal, but not necessarily so as you pointed out.

Yeah, in a little time after it sheds out some for her, it will probably be a bit more evident as to what it really is I would think.

I'll try to get a good belly pic. His belly is patternless, no checks. I'll also post a pic after he sheds and updates as he grows. I say he but could just as easily be a she, haven't checked. Possibly I won't know for sure what he/she is until big enough to breed and see what comes of it.

My 2nd clutch of corns was due to start pipping today and right on schedule I have my first pip. I'm itching to see if there are any lavenders in the clutch. Mom is Anery Lav, dad is Blizzard poss het Anery and Lav. Don't care so much about proving out the Anery as I do the Lav. I can't tell what the first one is, he's only stuck the tip of his nose out.

I have Ball Python eggs pipping right now too so it's just so exciting here. I hate having to go to work every day, just want to be here watching them pip.

I'm keeping the Fire, a Blizzard, the Diffused, and of course the "keeper" gray one. On the fence about a couple others as well like the Charcoal and the two Albinos. The rest will go up for sale at a reptile show in September. Whatever doesn't sell there will either go to another show or get whole saled to a pet store since I'm not comfortable with shipping so can't sell them online. The father is spectacular and he's just a normal, het for a bunch of stuff. So some of the normals from this group might turn out as killer as he is. Some of you might recognize him, his photo is one of the header pics on one of the corn snake sub forums. His name is Romeo. With as amazing as he is being just het diffused I imagine his actual diffused kids are going to be outstanding. His father is the Pewter pictured in the Corn Snake Manual which most of you likely have laying around somewhere...

I'm going to go out on a limb.... and say it actually looks more like a platinum! And to be diffused to boot... you hit some nice odds there, whether it is "just" a hypo pewter, or is actually a diffused platinum.

Ahh yes!, that is a VERY distinct possibility too actually!..LOL!
