Mortality rate

ChrisMaze Aug 09, 2010 11:46 PM

Just curious what sort of mortality rates everyone usually sees in hatchlings. One of the two motley snowsicles that I just hatched out is a goner as of today and just don't see any obvious reasons as to his turn for the worse.

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss. Can't answer your question because this is my first Corn clutch. Hopefully it's just a fluky thing and won't happen again to you.

some just aren't meant to survive.
in the wild some live, some feed other animals and some basically become fertilizer.
I've never had one die that soon after hatching but I guess it's not much different then the ones that go full term and then die in the egg right at hatching time...I guess yours just made a step further.
hope your other motley snowsicle makes it...good luck

Well the other motley snowsicle seems to be doing alright but now a motley anery has gone, too. They do seem like they were kind of the "runts" of the clutch. But other than that don't see anything wrong. Guess the odds are just against me now...

Hey Chris, dont take it too bad. I have had great clutches with everything hatching out only to have upwards to three babies who would not eat ANYTHING and die. I was just at a friends house last weekend who had several large clutches hatch a day or so before I got there and he had a dead one in the box when we checked. Hadnt even shed yet. As Draybar stated, it happens and the odds are not always kept the same for unknown reasons.

ChrisMaze Aug 11, 2010 01:49 PM

Yea. We're up to 3 dead now. And a couple others not looking so hot. And they just refuse to eat.

So sorry for your loss. That's really a bummer when you lose a special baby.

My problem has been those dying in the egg a full term. I've lost 4 corns and two black pines that way this year.
