Crazy question......

basssnatcher34 Aug 10, 2010 08:16 AM

I have a young adult bearded dragon, sex was really unknown until yesterday....lol Noticed she had a egg. I know they usually have several, but she has only had one. Now strange part about it all is that she hasn't been with a male. Egg looks good, but I would guess it is not fertile because of not being with a male, right? Should I even try to incubate the egg, give her a nesting box? What should I do at this point?

If someone had her with a male at any point, they could be fertile. Otherwise it's perfectly normal for them to lay infertile eggs. There will be more than one...you must set up a nest box or she may stress and become egg-bound. Look at one of the recent questions down below about laying and Phldy mentions what you need to do.

The description for an egg-laying box is down below posted on August 7th by PhldyPayne...under the post entitled " thanks again for looking." [ That's the header for the thread ]

You definitely need to get an egg laying bin set up. It is very unlikely your female only has one egg to lay. Most often a few dropped eggs lain individually is a sign she needs to lay a clutch and so far has not found a suitable nesting site. With infertile eggs there is a higher chance of egg binding which can be fatal.

It doesn't cost much nor take alot of time to set up an egg laying bin. No more than $20, less if you already have a tub of sufficient size. Just buy a bag or two of washed children's play sand, fill it into a tub. Add enough water (if required, as a new bag of sand usually is damp enough to start) so it packs down nicely without being over wet. No water should come out if you squeeze a handful as hard as can.

Below is my egg laying bin, with my 19" girl for size comparison.
