I think my snake is going blind...

AJ45458 Aug 10, 2010 10:23 AM

My snake, for the past two weeks has been having cloudy eyes. So naturally I just thought that he was going to shed and was just in his blues. He sheds very well, and like always I got a full shed from him, but his eyes are still cloudy....and I don't know what it could be or what to do. I've looked on a few forums on other web sites but no one really seems to know whats going on. I dont have a problem taking him to the vet, but I just wanted to know if there was anything I could do, before I do. OR if anybody could tell me what's going on with him.

In his last shed, did you see the eye caps in the shed? If he has retained a few layers of eye caps that could explain the cloudy look to his eyes. If the shed is missing the eye caps, I suggest providing a moist hide, or a small towel (big enough for your snake to be wrapped up in, a hand towel is usually big enough unless you have full adult who is over 4'). Dampen it with luke warm water and sort of loosely wrap your snake in it and put it back into his cage or a spare sweater box (or smaller container if your snake is still young). Leave it in over night. The extra humidity from the damp cloth and the cloth texture should help your snake rub off the unshed eye caps.

If the cloudiness continues and soaks etc don't remove the eye caps (i know you can try to manually remove these but just in case this isn't a stuck eye cap issue, I rather not suggest it) I would take your snake to a vet. It is possible an infection is occuring under the protective 'lid' of the eye or something else.

Thank you SOO much. I did what you said and wrapped him up in a warm cloth and also put a container in his tank with a little warm water in it. I'm goin to make him a vet appt. tommorrow. And again thanks for the information.

snakes do go blind but it would be a little odd for both eyes to go cloudy and blind at the same time...that quickly
I have one that is blind in one eye. It started with a small white dot in the center of her eye that over the course of about a year grew to basically cloud her entire pupil.
It wasn't within a couple of sheds so if I were you I would go with the great advise given above about retained eyecaps.
