indoor breeding

blackzilla Aug 10, 2010 05:57 PM

Does anyone know of or had any luck themselves breeding Ctenosaura or cyclura that are kept indoors the whole year? It seems like most breeders have their speciemens outside for most of the year if not all.

I breed cyclura being indoors year around(with the exception of the short summer I have here....and then there only outside during the day). I know Kelly Paul bred Stenosaura completely inside this year. There is argument that outside animal's have a better fertility rate, yet I feel it has to do with animal health. The secret is light cycle. I have all my animal's on a light sensor that turns the lights on at dawn and off at dusk. You can get it at wormsway.com. It is orignally designed for greenhouse fans that need to be on during the day for ventilation. Works great. If anything it is to sensitive. I actually put a 4" black PVC pipe in front of it to reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor. It costs about 80 bucks and is rated for 1500 watts.

I always get all infertile eggs in the first clutch my females lay.. after that its all good... think it has to do with little to low heat and no natural sun..this may drag out the maturity or something.. the diet is next to perfect (they never get health problems) but i have never bred cyclura.. only other iguanas,,, my big female rhino is digging like crazy and stop feeding.. she doesnt show any signs of eggs when i feel her belly but i have learnt from some of you guys that they somethimes dont show it.. especially the first time they lay..

Cheers!
