Rhino eggs

jskahn Aug 10, 2010 06:22 PM

This may seem like a dumb question, but any help would be appreciated.Yesterday my Rhino layed eggs.Unfortunately, her enclosure is 12' x 28', and I can't find the eggs. I missed her digging. There is an area that she seems to protect.Even though the soil in that area is too hard for her to dig in. I am curious wheather she would know, that is where she might have tunneled to.Has anybody had the same thing happen? I hate to put her through being locked out while I try to dig if is hopeless.

It is highly likely the area she protects is where the eggs are. Believe me they can dig in very hard soil. If possible they dig a long burrow with an egg chamber dug in the side. Your best strategy is to find the entrance and then follow it back until you locate the eggs. There was a time over 20 years ago I allowed them to nest almost under natural conditions but now I'm lazy and it's much easier by just providing a nest box. The area she rigorously protects is likely where the nest is located...thanks

Thanks Tom. I tried to dig again, where she is protecting, with no luck.My only hope is that they hatch and I find any, before the adult pair does.
