Big Male and Small Female?

KevinM Aug 11, 2010 08:54 AM

A buddy of mine has a huge male speck he acquired, along with a smaller pair of juvies. Are there any issues involved with pairing a really large male with a small female as long as she is mature enough to breed/lay? He is concerned about the size difference, but may be concerned unnecessarily. I breed corns currently, and the only kings I bred previously were alternas. I have used male corns and alternas larger than the females, but this male holbrooki is well over four feet IMO, and could potentially be paired with a virgin 32 inch female. I am not familiar with the ways of getula with regards to breeding at all.

Kevin,....

In my experience, when you place them together and the smaller female doesn't seem to panic and constantly bolt up the cage walls from the male, it is generally a good sign that they will settle down and breed. But every now and then, some smaller snakes can be very afraid of a larger mate too.

It's sort of one of those "not always 100% guaranteed" things, as is a lot of other things about snake keeping..LOL!

Good luck with it bro!

This year I bred a large male intergraded to a small apalachicola king female. It was a success to say the least. The male is pushing 6feet and the female is in the 3.5 to 4feet range. She had 13 eggs first clutch with 4 turning into slugs. Her second clutch, yeah that is right she double clutched, she had 6 with 2 slugs. The first clutch is hatching as we speak. Found 3 pipping this morning. You have to be careful with kings snakes because of them being natural snake eaters....lol I would watch them mate and as soon as she was trying to get away from the male and not really showing interest, I would take her out. Give her acouple days seperation try to feed them both and re-introduce them (with a size difference always keep an eye on them).

for the most part male kings are just bigger than females, of course size isnt an issue if you allow your snakes to bond you wont have any problems. i have many pairs that live together year 'round with no problems,,,,,,,,, thomas davis
