Oh the agony.....

rainbowsrus Aug 11, 2010 02:01 PM

Found Wilma late yesterday out of her moss hide which she's been in for weeks straight. She was in the water bowl with a baby hanging out of her vent. Also found a preemie and a couple of smallish slugs on the floor. The baby was a still and she's not passed anything since then. ARGH!!!! I've read of BCI that have passed a small amount of babies/slugs by accident before delivering the litter a few days later.

And I have to be at work....arghhhh!!!!

Both were stills. And I have a feeling she's going to make this a long drawn out thing. Nothing at lunch. Right now there's not much I can do except watch and wait.

np and appreciate the good thoughts.

I post these not so stellar, not so fun experiences to help educate noobies that it's not all fun and games. Sometimes it just sucks. There are several real possibilities with her (listed in my preference).....

1) She just slipped some out while trying to void her waxy stool. Still a decent litter inside that will come when ready.

2) Same as 1 but a less than stellar litter.

3) Something went wrong and she lost the whole litter, soon to be left for me to cry over and clean up.

4) Something really bad went bad and I could end up losing Wilma as well as the litter.

Yeah, I'm hoping for #1 but I truly believe in the saying "Nothing ventured, nothing gained". Sometimes complications set in and you will lose an animal, even though still very unlikely, much more likely when you breed them.

Dave,
...Good post. Sorry for the problems with this litter. Breeding is difficult and can have very bad results. I only very rarely lose a snake and when I do it is almost always related to reproductive problems.

Sorry to hear that Dave, I know all too well, I had a P. Brongersmai give me 25 bad eggs and just 1 good one, and in the good one it had twins, which got me thinking, good this can actually turn out pretty cool, to find them hatch with kinked spines, one passed and the other one is eatting.

But hopefully this is just a fluke to build up suspence and you end up with an amazing litter.

Just stumbled on this thread Dave! I noticed, you haven't posted since yesterday! Here's hoping you've been too damn busy cleaning up goop and putting babies in shoe boxes! Good Luck!

rainbowsrus Aug 12, 2010 11:52 AM

She's cruising around her cage but nothing else has come out so far....

Not visibly in distress so I'm on a wait and see mode.

Hi, I just noticed this post and wanted to offer some encouragement. I had something similar happen to me earlier this year with my GRB. It started with a small slug, then three days later I found waxy stool, another larger slug, and a fully developed still born. Naturally by this point I was freaking out, but five days later she delivered a litter of 13 healthy babies. So perhaps not all is lost. Try not to pull your hair out waiting.

Good Luck!

Thanks Mike,

While I am pulling my hair out and stressing over this girl, I do believe it's just one of those things and am hoping for the best. Funny, I've had dozens (and dozens) of BRB litters and this is the first time for this scenario.

Good to see she did actually end up passing the rest of the babies, plus slugs an all;(
In your post, you say, that she isnt visibly in distress.
If she had been, out of interest, what would your cause of action been then?

15.24 brbs

rainbowsrus Aug 13, 2010 01:10 PM

Honestly, would have depended on situation, could have helped her pass a mass of slugs by manually manipulating her lower regions. I've seen pics of a boa where the owner was manually extracting a mass by inserting his fingers and working it out. Of course BRB's are smaller so that might not work. Warm bath to help her relax/move it down etc. And of course there's always the VET but I hate transporting a gravid female if I don't have to.

Not great but also not nearly as bad as it could have been. I guess more like a 2 1/2, something did go wrong and she did lose a fair amount but still managed to deliver some healthy babies.

(what I listed as possibilities yesterday)

1) She just slipped some out while trying to void her waxy stool. Still a decent litter inside that will come when ready.

2) Same as 1 but a less than stellar litter.

3) Something went wrong and she lost the whole litter, soon to be left for me to cry over and clean up.

4) Something really bad went bad and I could end up losing Wilma as well as the litter.

Tuesday she dropped two stills and two slugs.

Wednesday - no change.

Thursday at lunch - still nothing yet.

Thursday after work, she finally dropped her load. Did not look good going into the cage has she was in the water bowl and a few stills and slugs were on the paper. I did find a live one right away next to the stills so I new fairly soon it wasn't all bad for the babies. She dropped what looked like most of it in the hide. Found a total of....

9 babies (one even bit me)
7 more stills (9 total)
7 more slugs (9 total)

So I guess this was a niner litter?

No pics yet, will get some later.

Dave,
...Congratulations on a not so bad final result.

rainbowsrus Aug 13, 2010 01:18 PM

Thanks Jeff, I'm good with the results, mom is fine and I have more babies to play with. And they're feisty, got bit several times!!

Really sucked to have to clean up all the stills and slugs though. But it's a real part of breeding, it's not all wine and roses!!!

Sorry to hear about the slugs/stills but atleast you got 9 babies & mums ok.

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, anytime mom is OK, it was a OK pairing. Healthy babies makes a good pairing.

For the most part not, lotto is a sucker bet. I'd much rather roll the dice with my BRB's. MUCH better odds!!

Yeah, a few more than last year and mom is fine so all in all a successful breeding. And they look nice so!!!
