Help I have a sick veiled

chamoti4 Sep 24, 2003 06:15 PM

I recived a 5 mouth old male veided from a friend who was moving. I brought him home with all his supplies. I went online to do some research on him and found he didn't have uvb (full spectrum lighting). I also noticed his front and hind legs on his left side were a bit swollin and not straight. I took him to reptile place in town. The guy told me he had the begining signs of MBD. And gave me the right lighting.
My question is... Is there something I can do to help his situation. I give him his supplement 4 times a week. He will not for the life of him eat veggie. But he will eat mealies I coat in baby food (mixed veggies). I keep both his lights on, heat and uv 10 hours a day.

I just want the little guy better.
Oh and the guy told me that MBD is reverable is that ture?
Hes also not active a usual.
Thanks for all the help

are you supplementing him with vitamins and calcium?

I would take him to a vet that specialized in reptiles or chameleons and they could give you a liquid calcium supplement and check the swelling in his leg for you. It could be something else and a vet could give you a better idea of what is going on.
Also get a small sunning cage and take him out for some sun (best times are between 10AM and noon) Just make sure he has access to shade and is not over heating. The sun can do wonders for him. You also have to be careful not to overdo the supplements. The safest way to get proper nutrition in him is well gutloaded crickets. I would only supplement that heavy for a short time if a vet says he needs it. Then go back to a more normal supplementing scheduele. Also a vet can give him a calcium and D3 shot if the MBD is very bad. MBD can be reversed but the damage it has already done cannot be reversed. If a bone is crooked from it it will stay crooked. MBD is the lack of Calcium in his system. The crooked bones are a symptom but once the bone is crooked it will not straighten, we can only prevent further damage such as bones breaking because they have become brittle. I hope that helps.
