Here is what I have . . .

yodaky Sep 24, 2003 06:28 PM

This afternoon I went to the store and bought the following:
1 10g aquarium
1 coconut shaped hide
- plan to use paper towels for the time being to make this a humid hide
1 hollowed out-halfed log hide
1 low-level plastic water dish
1 undertank heater
1 canister of Calcium and Vit. D3 powder
1 glass ash tray for mealworms/vit supplement

Will that suffice for a couple of weeks? I also plan to use just an ordinary lamp bulb overhead to simulate day time. I will be using paper towels as a substrate aswell. I brought home a electric thermometer from work tonight to make sure the temp is close to 88 or so. Why in gods name would they make an undertank heater without a temp. gauge? That makes no sense!!! If there are no immediate problems with this setup I have every intention of bringing home a leo (just one to start with) tommorrow

you are good to go with that setup, and the regular light bulb is fine as they dont require a UV light, good luck and get a healthy one

Yea, just dont buy it from the pet shop. You'll most likely run into problems later...

Your setup sounds great I don't know why the make under tank heaters that way. Its very frustrating though. First i bought the UTH, then the rheostat to control the temp and a digital thermometer. If they could put that all in one setup it would be great. The digital thermometers alone cost me $30, they have a probe that goes in the tank and sits on the UTH, plus i need 6 more, got 7 geckos. At least each Rheostat controls the temps of 2 under tank heaters. All in all i've put out around $1000 for the basic setups.

Where are you getting your gecko from? Make sure to post pics

I am new to the Gecko scene myself, and received alot of GREAT advice from this forum. Your setup sounds good, not just as a temporary one.
I also would advise you to go to the classified section of this site and check out the deals the breeders have, I am getting a pair from EVERGREEN Herps in WA BRice is giving me an awesome deal on.
Lastly get one or actually a pair that YOU are impressed with not one the seller wants to get rid of.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out for you, Johnny

thanx for all the fast and positive feed back. i had wanted a gecko from petsmart, though i was warry of major chains to begin with. its just this one i saw was extremely active yesterday, crawling all over his enclosure and trying to climb up the silicon sealant around the sides. it was just cute there is a place called aquatic critter near where i live that i will probably get it from now that someone said not to get one from a chain (just echoed my concerns lol)

Where are you located, we have an AQUATIC CRITTER here in Nashville, TN
They have a Blizzard Male that is beautifull, but it was beating up the female (I bought the female) and hopefully will be mating it with the male I'm getting from Brice.
The store here in Nashville is awesome and I highly reccomend them, If there is something you want but don't see it talk to Travis, He knows it all or can get the right answers for you!!

Nashville huh? I live in La Vergne and have a dentist appointment tomorrow near Vanderbilt and thought I might swing by AC tomorrow after the dentist. I am currently using a digital thermometer to measure the temp on the UTH right now and it is currently 91F directly on the UTH (glass and paper towels between them actually) I am not meaning to pester anyone, I just dont wanna kill the first gecko i get, ya know.

JT3119 Sep 24, 2003 10:04 PM

I have mine set up at 88 degrees, 91 kinda scares me, but they can give you better advice at AC, like I said check with Travis He is great about stuff like that.
Also don't rule out online shopping either, there are excellant deals to be had. If possible get Het's, if you think you might breed in the future, its like getting several for the price of one.
If your not familiar with the Het idea Travis can break it down for you easier than I could.
Good luck and let me know what you get tomorrow, JOHNNY

My advice is buy the gecko you're attracted to, as long as it looks healthy, whether from a pet store or a breeder. I have bought 4 leos, from 2 different pet stores & one breeder. Only one was healthy & grew nicely w/o a trip to the vet & a week or more of meds & that was one from Petsmart! I figure you just buy one that you like that looks healthy & plan on $100 for vet bills as that's entirely possible. Best of luck!
