Brumating cooler

skincity702 Aug 14, 2010 10:13 AM

Hello all,
I house all my snakes in a large room in the house and the temperature is maintained with a small space heater as the rest of the building is kept fairly cool during the summer months. Transversely during the winter months the building is kept in the mid 70's. That being said I do not want to move my snakes outside for fear that they may not actually stay at low enough temperatures to brumate successfully. What I would like to do is build a cooler that can easily maintain a steady temperature and can also be kept inside. I was leaning towards a wine cooling unit to bring temps down without taking them too far. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
-JT

Yes, I know several people that have very successfully brumated "colder" species in wine coolers. Just allow for a bit of fresh air exchange, and you will be good to go. My buddy just had GREAT success with egg production from several types of montane zonata. If those do well, just about anything else on the planet will too.

Latin American milks certainly don't need anything close to those 50-55 degree temps though. But by the same token, they too can be cooled just the same, and certainly work well too, but no need to go as low in temp either.

good luck!
