Corn Agressive Unless Fed Small Rats

leo_boy Aug 14, 2010 05:27 PM

I have had this corn snake for close to 10 years, the past few I have been unable to handle it because it always seemed to be in feeding mode. I was feeding Jumbo Mice and it still seemed hungry. Two weeks ago I fed it a Small Rat and ever since it has calmed right down. I actually handled it for the first time in three years today.

Anyone else ever had a similar experience with a large adult?

I also noticed as I was handling it that if the snake backed up in my hands the belly scales would seem to grip my hand and I could feel them shift away from the snake a little. Is this normal? I haven't held this snake for a long time.

Totally normal on the belly scales. They are designed to be flexible for gripping. Glad you figured out the trick to calming down your bitey corn! My adult corns are all on rats. They are "rat snakes" after all If I had them on mice I'd have to feed them 2-3 mice a week to fill them up, easier to just do one good sized rat and they have no problem wolfing them down. It does sound like your corn wasn't satisfied with just the mice.

it's that a rat fills the snake better than a mouse... feed it more - i dont think the snake cares what it is as long as it get enough of it.
