UTH and Plastic

z10silver Sep 24, 2003 07:23 PM

Is it safe to use a zoomed UTH on a rubbermaid sweaterbox? The package says not to use on plastic but I just wanted to check.

the lamp should be plenty and as long as the room the gecko is in is about 75 it should be fine at night,my room with no UTH reads 74-78 in the mourning and 85 during the day

you could get those small 5" lamps with clamps and hook it to the side and use 40 watt bulbs so its not too hot,if its tall enough no top is needed as long as thier are no branches to climb out and you have no cats or dogs to get in

as the bulbs get VERY hot and readily melt plastic.

My heat tape, even turned all the way up, does not get hot enough to melt my rubbermaid containers.

like you need to do anyway, it should be okay, because you will control the temp and keep it cool enough. Just be sure to have air space.

I have a rack for my snakes and use UTHs and thermostats for all the rubbermaid boxes, and I haven't had any problems. I don't trust UTHs to not overheat, anyway, so I use thermostats in my tanks, etc., too. Just be sure there is about a 1/4" gap under the box for air circulation (most of the boxes are raised up, but some aren't).

You can use a rheostat/dimmer instead of a thermostat, but the temps in your herp room have to remain fairly constant for a dimmer to work well--mine don't, so I use themostats instead.

HTH!
