States with the Best Snake Laws

gypsy1dragon Aug 17, 2010 02:12 PM

I am planning to move out of Florida. I'm trying to decide where to move. Does anyone have any information on which states have the best laws for (or most lenient) snake owners? I mean Florida has the licenses for the large snakes, Georgia you can't own cornsnakes, etc.

Any information would be appreciated. I am specially interested in southern states. Thank you.

Right here in NC. This is where NCARK (formed in 2005 to fight SB 1032) became USARK (currently fighting all bills nationwide). USARK has good relations here and actually beat the animal rights agenda to the punch by making legislation by keepers, for keepers.
Eastern box turtles are the state reptile, and as far as I know are not allowed to be kept for any other reason than that. Shows and pet stores cannot sell aquatic turtles, alligators or venomous and I know of few counties with local ordinances on large constrictors (ie:Orange County/ Chapel Hill area). Stick to rural areas where people mostly mind their own business (IMO). You'll be fine with whatever you keep. Land is cheaper too!!
South Carolina is pretty relaxed as well, especially with hots; but that may change due to pending legislation. I can say for sure, there won't be any proposed reptile laws in NC for a very long time. And your corn snakes are safe here, I promise you that.
Look into it though, in case I might have missed something on SC.

Good luck with your search and I wish you happy hunting. I feel for you and the current Florida situation. My hopes and thoughts for the best go out to all the keepers down there.

Thanks for the info. I have a variety of snakes, dwarf retic, redtail boa, several dummerils and the corn snakes. I found a beautiful place in Georgia and then found out you can't keep cornsnakes at all. I have been looking at NC, SC and TN. Do you know anything about TN regulations?

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I don't have regular access to the computer.

West Virginia is the most herp friendly I know. No state laws regarding herp ownership other than if you keep native species, you will need a $2 per year pet permit, $10 a year game farm permit if you breed them. Doesn't get much friendlier than that.
