WJXX (Jacksonville, Florida) 16 August 10 Animal Keepers Checking to see if Komodo Dragon had West Nile Virus
St. Augustine, Fla.: A favorite resident of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm has died.
The reason is still unknown.
Krakatoa, the Komodo Dragon, died Saturday.
John Brueggen, The Alligator Farm's Director, said the lizard had been acting unusual. It appeared, Brueggen said, to have neurological problems. He said the animal was walking on its wrists and was reacting to sunlight in a strange way.
Brueggen said Krakatoa was at the University of Florida's Veterinary school for the past week. It died there.
Brueggen said an MRI did not indicate any spinal damage.
He said the necropsy will show if Krakatoa had equine encephalitis or West Nile virus or something else.
Test results from the necropsy could take weeks to come back, although Brueggen has asked for a rush to be placed on the tests.
Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Zoo has been notified about the death and the testing for the diseases.
Brueggen said The St. Augustine Alligator Farm and the Jacksonville Zoo are the two places in north east Florida with Komodo Dragons.
Komodo Dragons are rare and are the largest living lizards in the world.
Krakatoa was 9 years old.
The St. Augustine Alligator Farm has another Komodo dragon.
