Unkeepable dream snake

varanid Aug 18, 2010 12:45 PM

What's the one species of snake you would love to keep and know you probably n ever will? For whatever reason...difficult to keep alive, dangerous, whatever

For me it'd be mud snakes or night snakes.

Dixon's milksnake(L.t.dixoni) would certainly have to be one!

None available in the U.S. OR Europe!. There are a "few" I am certain in some personal collections SOMEWHERE, but I have only ever heard of ONE pair for sale many years ago, and that pair got whisked-off to Europe many years ago. Nobody I know in Europe has ever heard of any ever surfacing there either.

Quite the elusive snake!..LOL!

lucky for me, my tastes in snake species run toward the "keepable". but the first snake i'll never have is a FL king- specifically the one at the nature center where i went as a kid. it was just a pretty standard-looking king, but it was MASSIVE and it was tame as a wet noodle. this thing (if my memory is not exaggerating) was as thick as a man's wrist and had to have been in the neighborhood of 7'. it ate large rats. i was in love. i don't know if he's still alive or kept at the nature center, but that critter is one of the first few that instilled my love of snakes.
the unkeepable SPECIES i would want is Cerastes cerastes, the desert horned viper. set him up in a large, natural desert vivarium... tasty. but the wifey is not ok with venom, and i would much rather keep her than a snake.
fun post.

It can't be done!

I'll tell you one herp that I have kept before and would really love to keep again -- but most likely never will. But it isn't a snake.

When I lived in Utah in the late 80s/early 90s I was able to buy small lizards called jeweled swifts in the local pet stores. These were gorgeous small sceloporus-type lizards, in a range of green/blue jewel tones. They were supposed to be from Central or South America. I would LOVE to have those again, but they don't seem to be available in the trade any more!

I had a trio of them in a large natural tank back in the late 90s. Unfortunately, Iw asn't careful with my planting and introduced something toxic that killed them I suspect it was this slug that was in some grasses I'd planted (huge and colorful usually=toxic)

For me, probably the mud snake, longnosed snake, and rough green snake. Also eastern indigos, which are available, but I cant justify the costs, hassle of permitting, and size of caging required to keep it well LOL!!!

varanid Aug 19, 2010 10:11 AM

I plan to collect a juvy long nosed or two this year an next (trying to get a small group). I'll let ya'll know how the turn out

If I were going to keep hots, I think I'd get either a Gaboon viper or an eyelash viper. Beautiful animals.

For years I wanted an amethystine python, I finally broke down and picked up a pair of moluccans and I've been very happy.

King Cobras!!!
Any snake that can raise up to look at you eye to eye has to be incredible.
Of course, any snake that can bite you in the face without having you bend over kind of precludes backyard culture. Good luck applying that pressure bandage!
Still....

Hogg Island Boas. I recently saw some at the Porland Metro Reptile Expo. Just don't have the space.

One of those bamboo rat snakes with the deep red and black would be nice.

Also an emerald tree boa ...

Both too expensive.

I think it would have to be a reticulated python. I own small chihuahuas and cats, and I"m not willing to have my snake mistake them as food. Lol. I am thinking about getting a super dwarf though.

Or a rhinoceros viper,,.. but I'm not sure that I want to mess with venomous.

Night snakes aren't hard, feed them rosy reds and they do just fine. for a small snake I would love a group of ground snakes, so hard to get! My dream snake is the Gold Vine snake. I had one once that I traded a boa for, it came from a herpetologist that was describing the new subspecies and smuggled it in. It appeared to be an Oxybelis fulgidus, but bright yellow including the eyes and tongue. I have not seen one like it since. Some thing more realistic that I would like to find is a tentacled snake, this time I would use a UV filter to kill all traces of fungus in the water. Same with the pipe snake, and wolf snake.

ssssnakeluver Aug 27, 2010 02:48 PM

night snakes eat fish? never heard that one before.... the ones I caught in Nevada at lizards just fine and did well.

Yep, it's an old school trick for feeding frog eaters, most will go for a flopping fish! works great for the night snakes! Rosey reds are cheap and easy to come by compared to small tree frogs or lizards.

ssssnakeluver Aug 27, 2010 02:49 PM
