Baby whites tree frog?

kevman Sep 24, 2003 08:23 PM

I have recently pruchased a baby whites tree frog, one inch in length. It doesnt seem like he's healthy. He is very skinny and he seems like he's having trouble catching crikets. I tried slowing down the crickets by tearing some of their legs off, but he doesnt seem like he is hungery. Anyone with information that can help me, please reply!

Sounds like he might just be malnourished. This, unfortunately, is common with breeders who take on many species at once. Often, slower animals aren't fed because the breeder will neglect to feed them individually, and the result is malnourished frogs. The fastest and largest will ultimately prevail. This is sometimes concidered a method of culling as well.
Most breeders won't bite more than they are willing to chew. Some will. Could also have been the dealer, if purchased from a pet store or jobber at a market. We'll skip the problem and head to the solution though

Make sure the temp is in the middle of the ideal range. Keep it at about 82 degrees farenheit and keep the humidity at about 60%-70%. This is high, so don't always keep it there, but while your trying to get the frog to stay warm and hydrated it should be up there. Make sure there is clean water available at all times, and avoid bright light during the day and cover the enclosure to avoid any light at night if he's kept in a room with any more light than an alarm clock. Get some dull foreceps, or use your clean fingers with no soap residue on them to hand feed some the fattest dusted crickets. Make sure your feeding the crickets on a healthy high vitamin diet 12-24 hours prior to feeding. Some fluker's cricket food and some kale is sufficient. If he will take the crickets by hand, use mealworms or silkworms tomorrow. Only use these for a short time, this is to put some meat on his bones.

Everything as said above plus keep in mind that he's new in his home and can take a few days to adjust before he feels secure enough to want to eat. Keep him in a low traffic room, check in on him but don't hang out long. Let him get used to his new surroundings. If in a couple more days, he doesn't perk up and start eating better, I'd contact the place you bought him from and ask about it. You may also want to concider taking in a fecal sample to a vet to be checked for parasites. Just to be on the safe side.

Good luck and I hope your new baby gets nice and plump and Happy!!

This is the whole story and my baby whites. I got 2 bwtf at a local pet store i notice one was very skinny and the other was nice and plump. And i figured that that the condtion they were in i should get both so if one dies i get a refund and still have one frog. Wll the next day i come home from work and the skinny one is dead. so i got a refund and still have one frog. Three days later i notice the other one getting very slim so so i have no idea what is going on.

My tank is a 16g tall at (50-65 humidty and 65-80F)with two vents on each side and a screen on top he has a water dish that is small enough for him, but the only use i have seen it been used in is a death trap for circkets. He has a rock, stump and climbing stick and plastic plants to hide under. One problem is that he seems to dislike the bed-abeast because it sticks to him and he trys to get it off.

You can't just keep going out and buying frogs when the other one dies until you sort out whats going on!!!

The first one may have been diseased, and the second one may have contracted the disease from the first one etc. Without knowing the whole story and seeing the frog, it's hard to tell.

Did you strip the tank and disinfect it before putting your new frog in?
Did you buy your new frog from the same place? If so why? Did you tell them about what happened to the other two? Was this new frog from the same tank as they were in? If so, he may later develop the same disease as the other two and you will loose him too.
