A UPS Story

tspuckler Aug 19, 2010 09:08 AM

At 9:30 this morning I was hanging around the house, drinking coffee, when I heard a rumbling sound in the front yard. So I looked out the window and saw this:

The UPS man placed a box on my doorstep and promptly sprinted away. Almost like he wanted to get away from the package ASAP.

So I decided to check it out - maybe it was the new wire coffee filter I ordered (I'm having trouble with the paper ones, which seem to collapse frequently).

The box looked a bit big for a coffee filter, but you know how some shippers are - they put a little box inside a bigger box. So I opened the package and saw this. Though the name looked familiar, it was still early and my brain wasn't functioning at full capacity.

I took off the lid and saw my pair of Alabama Corns - how cool!

I wonder what they look like with the lids off the deli cups?

Thanks Jimmy!

Awesome babies.

Concern- UPS was going to leave the box on the doorstep? ...or did he know you were opening the door and someone was accepting the package?

Hey Tim,
I'm glad they got there safely and you are pleased with them but that does worry me that they just left them on the porch and left. They didn't even knock or ring the bell?
And yes, Doug I used ReptileExpress, their pricing was good but it may not be worth it if UPS is just going to drop the package and run.
This may be something as simple as placing a call to that local UPS to inquire as to why the delivery guy didn't knock or ring the bell.
I know the UPS guys that deliver here always ring the bell...and then stand way back when they here the dogs....lol

Thanks Jimmy, I'm glad there weren't any problems so far with it because I am going to start shipping stuff through them too.

I HOPE that idiot rang the door bell, or knocked!!!, they do when I get deliveries here where I am receiving stuff. Even totally non-perishable things.

I sure hope Tim tells us the dude made sure Tim knew he was there before hauling ass like that!

Doug unfortunately some UPS drivers don't knock or ring the bell. I have walked out and tripped over packages left on my steps. I tell people if you are expecting a live shipment then be attentive and wait near the door or check very frequently. I will try to make all of my shipments to where the buyer has to sign. I think that's the only way to assure they knock. If the buyer wants to waiver that then there probably won't be a live guarantee?

Yeah Jorge, that seems very logical that not ALL employees would go to the huge effort to do that split-second common courtesy, which seems like just pure laziness.

I always tell people to be home and be very aware of checking the door if they don't sign too.

Well being a truck driver I understand the mentality very well. It sounds like just a minute but you add that up for all your deliveries and it makes a difference. I don't act this way cause I'll take my time and do things right, but many drivers subscribe to this philosophy. Add to that the fact that most people don't call and complain unless something goes wrong, and you have what we see today.

Yeah Jimmy, he rang the doorbell. I sent out three shipments this week where each customer requested that the package not need to be signed for - not everybody's home at the time their package arrives.

But UPS usually at least rings the doorbell with each delivery here.

Why would anyone recieve a live shipment when they are not home?
I guess if you have a porch where the sun definately won't hiy it and maybe in cooler weather.

I was worried I will be reading another horror story about shipping...nice to read one that was a complete success.

Draybar, I have to say you package things quite nicely...and the sheet of paper will a detailed list of what each snake is and their feeding schedule was a nice addition. Also with clearly labeled deli dishes.

Some of the delivery people in my area are very bad...some barely knock on the door then are gone before I can walk across the room to answer. Then since they take off because I didn't open the door the exact second they knocked, I have to wait till the next day to pick up my package at the local drop off point. Called the delivery company about it, but haven't noticed any change...However in these cases it wasn't perishable stuff...though one time it was feeder insects.

Yeah UPS is bad about just dropping off the package and running so Iadvise everyone to do as I do. I wait by the door or better yet outside and don't leave till the snake arrives! I always coordinate the shipments to come on my day off and I check the status every 10 or 15 minutes and once the package is on the delivery truck I wait outside playing my giutar under a tree or something. The first snake I ever had delivered was Fed Ex and the lady driver heard dogs and dropped the box at the corner of the house. When I checked the status and it said "Delivered" I freaked! I called them and they said the lady got scared and left the box at the corner. I was furious! Luckily it was cold and the snakes were ok.
