JLballs Aug 20, 2010 10:47 AM

Just wondering how everyone goes about prekilling? Right now i do the whole grab the rat by the tail and break its neck by hitting it on the corner of a table...sometimes i miss with the smaller rats and it....well it gets a bit messy... any input is appreciated.

I use CO2 for larger batches of prekilled or any heading for the freezer. I use a TRex snap trap for just one or two. Any snap trap would work well though. Usually the domesticated rodents are so curious they walk right in to them without bait.

That is exactly what happened the one time I tried it. Furthermore, unless you are an expert from the get go, it is usually a very inhuman death for the rodent to be bashed repeatedly against a table or floor. My rodent colony is almost as much of a pet to me as my BPs and I wouldn't want to see them suffer like that.

Dave,
i have few balls that take PK...what i do for those that do take it....is i double bag a supermarket bag place the rat in the bag....face a clear open wall....swing my arm lightly back and forth.....and on about the third swing i follow through on the swing directly to the wall with a hard direct hit....the rats die instantly. ....sometimes there's blood sometimes there's not....depends what part of their body hits the wall.

If you are going to use the neck break, taking a dowel and putting it behind their skull...then pressing down really hard, works really well. No chance of missing.
