Odd looking Maurus update

stargeckos Aug 21, 2010 04:02 PM

Hi,

Today I got member here on kingsnake but my husband zactell / lunarballreptiles have been member a long time.
About a year ago we put pix up on a odd looking epicrates cenchria maurus and got some answers that it was something going on with her

I have not got babies from her yet and have sexed her last time yesterday 2-3 scales and she was all relaxed so it is a female. Maybe the male is a female, but he is bought as a male but he did not cooperate well when sexed so we just got it to 2-3 scales, will try again to sex "him".

I have been thinking seriously to sell the female and wonder what the experts says about it. I know I should keep her and prove her out but I am in at ballpythons and want to concentrate on them. I am not good at rainbowboa and want her to be proven out. And of course I want to get right amount for her against her value because of her looks

If someone have any ideas of what she could be I would be happy to get e-mails about it.

I will try to get 3 pix in this message, hope it works )

Thanks, Linda

Ahh, yes... I remember this one! From your picture it looks like the tail is starting to wrap the other one.... could it be a male?

At any rate, it is a gorgeous animal!

Hi Aubrey,

No i sexed it yesterday for the 3:rd time since I got it and yesterday it was all relaxed and it didint go in further then 2.-3 scales and the it must be a female. We are used to sex ballpythons so after 3 times sexing it must be a female )

But the other I bought as a male after i posted the first thread here, can maybe be a she :-/ Yesterday when we checked their sex the "male" did not cooperate at all and it went in 2-3 scales, but he was hard as stone and did not want to be sexed. He is in shed right now so I need to try again after shed, it should be a male but here in sweden everyone we have bought as males are females, the same for my friend with brasilians, she searched for a male and just got females when the where sexed

The male is NOT the normal brown on the pictures, thats a really big female I sold to get a male for the light lady

The light is a female, it cant be a male after the check yesterday when she was all calm and relaxed and it didnt went in longer, and its 3:rd time we sex her to be really sure, since we got her for about a year ago.

Thanks Aubrey

Don't want to start a fight, but that "light" colored Columbian is trying to breed your male "that won't cooperate" w/sexing! I'll bet money, you have them reversed!

No problems

The big dark was a female I have sold.
And the light is probe to female 2-3 scales and was all relaxed during we sexed her. Have been probe 3 times to female.
I know it looks that way in picture but they didnt breed during the time we got the big female bought as a male, but understand why when we probe the dark to female and not a male )

Thanks Linda

Linda,
...I bred Colombian Rainbows so easily from 1993 to 1997 that I thought they were stupid easy to breed. Since then with only one pair my breeder male has been real cage lazy and matings have been rare. When he was younger and I had two pairs of breeders I would put the males together early in breeding season and they would spend all their time in typical caduceus type competition and shoving each other around. As soon as I seperated them and paired them up one male with one female the mating activity began. The males were highly motivated. I believe the male to male agression helps to get males interested in breeding with these snakes. Some males will breed without this interaction but some seem to need it to get them thinking about sex. Your snake definitely has something going on. Rather than probing you can almost always tell maurus apart by palpating the tails. If you have an adult male and female to compare the male will have a longer thicker tail and if you slide your fingers down the tail applying some pressure you will be able to feel the hemipenes and the bumps at the end of them. The width of the adult males tail is especially noticeable in this subspecies.
Good luck,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for the information !
I will look at the normal brown after he has shed and see if I can feel and also try to compare both having them beside each other, that will not be easy though ha ha..

As another mention it looks like the light is tryning to breed the dark, but that is a female I sold, and because of the light is so easy to look the gender on and we got it to female 3 times it must be a female.

I sold the big normal female and got a male, but he is probably or could be a she, will check him/her again and try your method/ do like you describes. I want be on the safe side and as I ahve said rainbowboas is not my brigthest side.. its ballpythons for me that is my best knowledge.

Thanks again !

Linda
