Savannah Monitor Humidity

tbrowning1131 Aug 21, 2010 08:21 PM

I added a juvy savannah monitor to my collection about two weeks ago. Since that time I have read up and her temps are 120 on the hot side and around 80 on the cool. A new top is in the works in order to hold humidity but i have been unable to find any exact or round about numbers, everyone just says high humidity. So that is my question what is a good humidity for my savannah's habitat. Thanks for your advice and time.

The thing is you dont need exact numbers here. And you don't need high humidity either. You need a range. You want your offering to include areas of low humidity (a basking spot) and areas of high humidity (burrows).

Cheers,
Mike.

This is where having a deep dirt substrait comes in handy. it will keep the cage humid without having to spray it all the tim,e and allow the monitor to burrow down where it is more humid, while the top stays dry. And dont confuse humidity with keeping the cage wet! A lot of people do.

First thing first. Get rid of the crappy fish tank. These do not work with monitors.

Build a real monitor enclosure for your Savannah to grow up in. 6x4x4 with at least a good FOOT (12 inches) of substrate to hold humidity/temps and offer proper burrowing. In order to allow healthy burrowing you will need to find the right substrate mix.

Ideally, you would have done this before you purchased him.
