My new snakes!

Lizzy Sep 24, 2003 09:39 PM

I finally have my two corn snakes all settled into their new home!
I have a female normal corn, and a male chocolate albino.
I think the cage i have them in is a 30 gal, and I have pine chips as a substrate (i have a feeder cage)
The day time temp is 86 and the night time temp is 72
I've had them for about three days, and the male has eaten, but the female refused. I'm going to try to feed her again tomorrow.
Does this sound like a good setup? Any suggestions are welcome!

Congrats on your new corns however i see a few potential problems. I personaly don't think that pine is a good choice some say that the oils are toxic and can kill a snake. I don't know how true this is but i wouldn't risk it. Also how old are they? If they are hatchlings it is NOT a good idea to house together. You are risking cannibalism, feeding problems due to stress, and death/eggbinding from premature breeding. if they are full grown adults then housing them together is fine as long as neither has stress related problems but the tank is too small for both adults. Also the temps are a bit high. try lowering the daytime to 76-82 range. That seems to work nicely for my corns. Post pics when you get a chance! good luck!

I didn't know that corns were canabalistic!
They have been housed together for about three years before I had them, so I think they are pretty comfortable together.
Thanks for the tip about the substrate, I'll change that right away: I wouldn't want to hurt them.
Do you think they would be alright in the 30 gal for a few more weeks? I am having a stand built for a larger tank.
One more thing, should I be worried that my female won't eat?
Thanks!

I would probably keep them seperate permanently unless you don't mind them breeding without you knowing (surprise!)
Canniballism, when it occurs (rarely) is most often in hatchlings.

I have the room for more snakes, so I would like to have them breed.
Thanks!

Having 2 snakes together might be stressing out the corn that wont eat. There are alot of different opinions on caging snakes together. This is a heated debate and i feel like staying out of this one....Paul...chicken...hehehe
