Deceased snake

MightyBD Aug 22, 2010 12:08 PM

I found my Spider Ball Python 1 years old dead this morning

2 weeks ago she refused her f/t ASF, last week she refused to strike the small live rat.
Was going to try a live mouse Tuesday.
A few months ago she went off feed for almost 2 months, so I was not all to concerned.
Now she is dead, I am sad.

The back half of the body seems like it is squeezed with a bit of a ridge running down the belly.

Im sorry to hear that. Loosing a snake is never fun.
I had a Spider a few years ago, that also did that. She quit eating, then about a month later, she passed. I do belive her death was caused by her "Stargazing" Disease. Did your spider ever Stargaze? I just think the severity of the Stargazing on my snake is what caused her death. Im not 0. But im very sorry to hear your loss.

Thanks
You know I never really thought of stargazing as a cause.
But to think about it, she did act sort of stargazish a few weeks ago for the first time, only seen that head up wobble that once...
But the back half of the snake is very strange, tightened up, with a ridge running down its belly.

I'm sorry for your loss. It is really hard to lose a pet, especially out of the blue like that. If you have a good herp vet in your area, you might look into having a necropsy done to determine cause of death. If you have a collection of reptiles, it may help you understand whether or not you need to worry about something contagious in your collection. Even if you don't have other herps, sometimes just understanding the cause of death can help you move forward. If you do decide on the necropsy, you will want to refrigerate the body until you can get it to the vet (ASAP). Don't freeze it or you will cause damage that can interfere with some of the analysis.

Thanks
I have 2 other Balls, and 3 Russian Torts.
I am deciding if a necropsy is what I want to do, she went into my fridge for now tho.
The other balls, eat and have clean fecals which I check every few months.
The 3 torts have all recently been checked blood test and all.

When I offered her a life rat last week(Wednesday) she followed it around but when ever it moved closer to her she would get scared of it a little bizarre.

ive noticed in my spider acts kind of different than all of my other snakes. he acts really like skittish. he doesnt "stargaze" but he definately acts a little weird. he eats and does everything that a regular snake does, just acts kind of different....
