It's too d#$% hot for...

SouthernSerpent Aug 22, 2010 06:03 PM

me to be outside building a cage. Ninety four degree heat today at least, and I am out in the shop working on an 84"x42"x18" cage to put a set of retic sisters in that are about as long as the cage. No a/c in the shop. Just a piddly little box fan. Oh, did I mention that the snakes were my wife's? I really don't mind though. She is worth the trouble and the heat. I love her and the snakes. LOL!!

My shop was 90°F today, I kept working.

It was a break from the sun...working on another outdoor project.

Only 2 months till snow...I have a lot to do.

Post pics when you get them done, what are you going to do next year when the tics are twice that size?

Actually I plan on them running rampant through the house and terrorizing the pug, sleeping in the bed with us, and letting them eat stray homeless vagrants. LOL!!! J/K!!! I plan on having a few more of the same size and type of cages built. 84" inches is seven feet, so once I have cages built for each retic and burmese we have, it should last them till they are between 12-16 feet long. They are three and a half feet deep and a foot and a half tall. Please don't tell me they will outgrow that anytime soon. I know a shop keeper who keep one in a cage about 3 1/2' x 3 1/2'. She is sixteen feet long and so far as I can tell it does not bother her. I would not opt to keep one that large in something that small though. One day soon I plan on having a building built strictly for keeping all of our collection in save for a few custom cages in the house for display animals. I am keeping my fingers crossed and busting my behind hoping that day wont take long to get here either. My wife snapped a few pics of this enclosure while I was out their today, so I should be able to get some along the way pics as well as finished work pics.

I'm not a fan of deep short cages...particularly with potentially aggressive species or large animals. Reason being you have to put yourself at risk to clean the back of the cage and lets face it we don't always find another place from them to stay when cleaning the cage.

While it is possible to keep them in that cage for a few years, when feed properly tics will grow to 17' in a handful of years. While I'm not experienced with them in particular I did keep a Burmese a while back and my female grew to over 10' in just 2 short years.

Not trying to scare you off or challenge your decision, if I had the space there would be some Tic's in cages in my collection. Frankly I just don't have the space and I hardly have the extra hands a grumpy 17' snake needs.

Cheers

I love my wife too. But if she told me she wanted retics, I love her even more.

I can understand the concern over cage design. My wife and I have a huge respect for these animals, and know what harms can befall from poor decision making and poor planning. These two girls are really a dream to have. They express no aggression what so ever, although that's not to say they won't in later years. It's nature after all. We make it a sop to never clean an enclosure with the occupant in it. It will be harder when they are bigger, but it is the way we opperate. We have an eight inch western hognose that thinks he is part cobra, so that is the one I really don't care to work with much. He belongs to my wife as well. She owns the big snakes, and a few smaller ones. I own the carpets, two boas, and some balls. A lot of people have bad things to say about the carpets, but I have really enjoyed having them. I built a pretty good enclosure for the two large female jcp that I have and they love it. I really like the aspect of building my own caging, and learn more with every one I build. I also built a tortoise table for our baby sulcata. At some point I need to get all my pics gathered together and posted on here. I would enjoy the feedback and someone may have some pointers that I could use as well in my construction designs.
