Lesser Pied - Blue eyed Leucy

PiedPeddler Aug 22, 2010 06:11 PM

What!!! Almost a whole day without a pied combo posted! Well, now RyanT can rest easy... Here are some pre-shed pictures of our latest pied combo with a few of his siblings. The clutch is from breeding lesser het pied to pied. The flash totally wiped out the eye color. I'll try with different lighting after they have their first shed. Thanks for looking! (I know you're looking too, Ryan... You may not like what you see, but I know you're looking!)

Hello...

Nice looking snakes

But is the eyes really blue ?
A friend of mine got two yesterday but he says that the eyes are black with red pupills...

They looked blue-slate to me before they went cloudy. They are going into shed now so I'll follow up after they shed.

I'm confused, how would you get a BEL from a Lesser het Pied x Pied? I can see getting a Lesser Pied, but not a BEL? Am I missing something? Regardless they are beautiful snakes. Congrats!

Thank you! Yes, the lesser pied is a blue-eyed leucistic. Ralph Davis produced the first one in 2007. Sometimes there can be small patches of lesser color, and sometimes they are all white like this one. It is weird that the Mojave pied has a dark head and the lesser pied has a white head. The lesser pied was produced first and I was really expecting the mojo pied to be a BEL just like the lesser.

The post shed eye color will be interesting. Either way I would still think of it as a 100% white pied. It seems like one copy of lesser promotes very high to all white in homozygous pieds; even more so than other combos like spider pied or even mojave pied. With the clean bright white quality of the pied white I would think they would be the ultimate white snake regardless of if you consider them leucistic or not (maybe leucistic phenotype by definition even if not genetically what we call leucistic).

I just hatched out a pair of chocolate possible het pieds with nice belly markers. Anybody already know if chocolate will promote high white in pieds or not?

I'll do some macro pictures of the eyes once he sheds. They are not dark, piebald eyes. I have taken hundreds of pictures of pied hatchlings and none of them have eyes like the lesser pied above. The flash caused that odd reflection in every picture of him. I will say this... The eyes are smaller/flatter than any other ball python I have hatched. That also seems to be the case in other lesser pieds I've seen pictures of. This doesn't worry me too much since the eyes look a little small in Ralph Davis' hatchling pictures, but look much better proportioned in his yearling video on you-tube. I'm suspicious that because the eyes are so reflective, our perception of color may be heavily influenced by your surroundings while viewing or photographing the snake. Anyway, I'll do my best to get good eye photos once he sheds...
