Lets see your monitor pics and cages.

Ra_tzu Sep 24, 2003 10:10 PM

this is a pic of my little girl, about a month and 1/2 ago but will try to take some more tommorrow.

Ra_tzu Sep 24, 2003 10:31 PM

really no big deal, a 7x6x4 enclosure. Provides all my girl needs for now .Next summer I will build her a completely new enclosure and will give this one to one of my suriname boas. I live in Florida, so I am seriously considering an outdoorindoor enclousre, so she can get her yayas out. Will most likely do so

This is boring compared to the pics you guysgals could post.

Ra_tzu Sep 24, 2003 10:34 PM

That was it in its beginning stages. Cmon RSG, lets see your best pics, Im sure you have plenty for others to enjoy.

well done.

The one of the hatchling dumeril latching on to your finger is hilarious.

rsg Sep 25, 2003 11:45 AM

I couldn't believe it when it happened, they are certainly determined little guys.
The picture you posed below was really cool. Nice how the monitor picked the highest sunny spot of the tree.
I wonder what the difference in temperature was from the base of the tree, to the spot the monitor is basking?

black one with the white spots! Is that indicus or doreanus? (and no, I cannot tell the difference as of yet)

I like that you included a couple of your favorite, the Dum. buddy. RIP.

Which monitor is closest to your heart now?
Cheers, D.

rsg Sep 27, 2003 05:12 PM

The one I am holding is doreanus, the one with the light grey background is jobiensis.
The first picture in that post is my female dums, she is the first monitor I bought about 8 or so years ago and is still my favorite.

El__Quijote Sep 26, 2003 10:28 AM

I'm sorry, but I'm new to this (monitors, not herps in general, as I have well over 20) and I'm looking into getting a monitor...
I'm extremely impressed with your monitors and the enclosures you built for them...
My favorite one is the one in the 1st, 4th and 7th pictures... I'm guessing its the same animal, right??? It is absolutely gorgeous...
If you could tell me what kind it is, and where I can find some housing/care information for it, I would greatly appreciate it...
Thanks,

~ El__Quijote

Can you guys teach me to put pics on this site? I have some pics of Jango as a 5 inch long hatcling and of him about a month ago or so at about 18". Me and my brother took some more of him at 21" and his size now 22" and we are going to take more and take some of him in his new tank and him eating. He has a digital camera so I'll get those pics from and I'll take more. How do you add pics now?

My Savannah Monitor Jango's Statistics:

I have always liked this one. The female is no longer with us. But her daugther and granddaugthers are. The male is over twenty and doing great. F

Gene Sep 25, 2003 10:00 AM

I didn't realize Gracie was no longer alive. I probably missed that somewhere along the way. I have a really bad habit of doing that.

I don't know why but it dawned on me just how awesome it would be to have the offspring of some of your favorite monitors around long after they are gone. Lord willing, I will have that too one day.

Gene

FR Sep 25, 2003 10:38 AM

Yea, if you notice, she has very large feet for her size. When I obtained her, she was 28 inches TL, and was in captivity as least 8 years(what people told me) She was a mini adult. I was lucky to recieve two babies, which turned out to be a pair.(raised together) Again very lucky.

People in the states are a bunch of dorkwads, as they do not understand how close they were to not being able to ever have lacies. I believe, she was the last viable female in private hands. When she died, we had two males and two eggs. Who would bet on that?

Your comment about the offspring makes me think, years ago, a great reptile breeder, Ernie Wagner, A cartoonist, Gary Larson, and I would sit around and have conversations, nothing else to do in rainy seattle. We would discuss how lucky were were to be allowed to make a living with our hobbies. Well one day Ernie, whos 9 years older than I, said, one day we will hatch reptiles that will outlive us. A very odd thought. But very accurate, as the lacies I hatch now, could indeed outlive me. F

Gene Sep 25, 2003 02:40 PM

Boy did you nail that one.

I had not noticed the feet. That "mini adult" comment got me to thinking though.

1. About how the less than ideal conditions the animals are kept in affect their lives. (size, health, life span, and reproductive abilities)

2. The true life spans of these animals. In nature their life spans are a fraction of what they should be in captivity yet how many are killed by igonrance rather than by nature.

We are all very lucky to only be thought of as weirdos and allowed to continue our hobby. Those of you that can indeed make a living at it are a little beyond luck in my oppinion. I unfortunately don't know much of Ernie Wagner outside of what I have read on the web. I do know he was breeding reptiles well before I was born. And somehow you & Gary Larson just seem to fit. Something about the sence of humor thing I think.

I really enjoyed holding those Meretins at the show. Is that a species you are going to continue to work with?
