Hatchling Question?

JMo Aug 24, 2010 08:22 PM

My maiden clutch (5 eggs) is hatching. So far 4 are out; three of the four are mojaves; waiting for the 5th to pip. My second ever clutch (6 eggs)is beginning to pip; can't wait to see what comes out - could be pastels, could be more mojaves - we'll have to wait and see.

Here's my question - where do I put the hatchlings? I removed them from the hatch box and put them in another container with damp paper towel. Do I put the container with the hatchlings back in the incubator (89 degrees) for awhile or, do I put the container in a rack with heat tape underneath?

Any insight and advice is very much welcomed. I'll try to post some photos tomorrow.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

As soon as my babies are out of their eggs and they have been rinsed off with tap water, I place them all in the same tub and that tub is placed in my hatchling rack. I keep the babies from the same clutch together on wet paper towels with a small bowl of water. After they shed I seperate them and place them in their own tubs.

If you have any other questions I can be reached at 408.981.6694

Best of luck and congratulations

Brian - thanks for the quick response. I moved the container with the hatchlings to the rack; awaiting the next ones to come out.
Question = once the hatchlings are out of the egg, they have some umbilical cord still attached - do I try to remove this or will it eventually take care of itself?

Again Brian - thanks for the help.

if its jsut a little leave it but make sure they are plenty moist. if its a bit tie it off as close to the body as you can with thing string/fishing line/dental floss

Jim,

It depends on the size of the umbilicus. If its about the size of the end of your little finger or so then don't worry about it, nature will take care of that.

In worst case cenerios we have to tie off the yoke sac at the base of the snake with dental floss of 6 to 10 pound test fishing line and then cut it off.

Good luck

Brian

Jim, I do it alot like Brian with this difference. After the babies come out of the eggs I will take them out of the incubator and rinse them, clean the tub or put them into a new tub with a wet papertowel on the bottom and a water bowl for them and pop them back into the incubator as a group for the week or so that it takes them to shed. After they have all shed I put them into their own tub in the hatchling rack. They need to be good and moist so putting the wet towel in the bottom and putting them back into the incubator where the humidity is 90% keeps them as moist as possible. I wish you Great luck with this next clutch too. Jay from Sunny AZ

All - thanks for your suggestions and advice - I really appreciate them all. Still waiting for two in the 1st clutch of 5 - one is 3/4 of the way out, the last egg hasn't started yet. The 2nd clutch of 6 - one is out (mojave) and three of the remaining 5 have partial heads sticking out.

That last egg needs to be cut. If it hasn't pipped by now and three of the others are all the way out, it might be dead.

JMo Aug 25, 2010 08:26 PM

Mike - thanks for the reply and the advice. When I got home from work this evening I cut the egg - you were right - the hatchling inside was dead. On another note, when I got home the second clutch had hatched - all were out of their eggs; however, all but one was dead - a real bummer! My guess is that there was not enough oxygen in the container to sustain the 6 hatchlings - I didn't have holes in the egg container.

Well - I guess you learn a few things as your experience and knowledge base grows. I did manage to hatch a total of 5 eggs, 3 mojaves and 2 normals. What an experience - I'm already anticipating the next season!

Thanks again,
Jim

Sorry to here that man. I always drill a 1/8" hole in my tubs. This seems to be sufficient for air exchange. Best of luck next season, I know I can't wait.
Eric.
