Are they born with some orange showing ???

RedQuake Sep 24, 2003 10:58 PM

My hypo Dot, has spots on her head and tail and Only two large dots on her back, thus the name, however, when i fed her tonight i noticed that a bright orange hugh has started on the base of her tail. TOTALLY unexpected for sure!!! I never noticed this before so i would assume they aren't born with it??? Now i'm more excited than ever to see her grow up.

It'll be really cool if she developes even alittle orange on her tail like the geckos i've seen posted lately

Thanks,
Red

I have seen different things in my geckos. My first hatchling of the season was born with orange bands. Not like "really" orange, but they were orange and not yellow.

I have had ones come out with yellow bands and then turn orange as they got older.

I have also had some of my hatchlings hatch out with just a hue of orange on their tails. If you look closely you can see it, but its not like its so noticable if you know what I mean. But after the first few sheds then it becomes noticable.

My only male that I produced this year started turning out to be a baldy, then he got a few brown spots on his head, and now those brown spots are turning orange.

I guess you just have to wait and see what they turn out to look like, as sometimes they can do a total 180 on you.

I'm not sure as far as everyone else goes, but this is what I have seen in my geckos this year.

Thats sooooooooooo cool. I think Dot just shed as there was pieces of skin in her tank....I'm really looking forward to her next shed to see if more orange comes out

Today is picture day......i'm going to try and get pics of all of them, so i'll take some closeups of her tail

Thanks again

I have had them hatch out with orange, some with REALLY nice orange and by the time they were a couple of months old it was GONE. TOTALLY. Hense my mantra: Do not buy selectively bred leos for which you want a certain visual characteristic before 6 months old.

Thats a good mantra to live by. I didn't buy Dot for what she could become (i don't plan that far ahead hehehe), i bought her cause she was adorable, that and her clutchmate had already been purchased. Her sister had a jungle pattern on her back with bands on her tail, so yes not a true jungle but i did love the pattern. Once i found out that that one was already sold, i saw Dot and fell in love. She is also one of the most personable geckos i have. She never fails to come right up to the glass of her tank when i come around.

The orange she is starting to show is a bonus, especially if it continues to develop and she ends up with a true carrot tail. If not thats fine too. Its exciting having young ones like this and seeing them grow and change.
