situla finally hatched

mattkau Aug 25, 2010 10:15 AM

My two striped leopard rat eggs hatched a couple days ago. Both females. I will hold one back and sell the other. Here are the pics. I'll post some more after they shed.

Thanks Doug. This is my first time breeding this species. I love the large size of the hatchlings, but that is also why they don't have many. I'm happy with these two females though.

Wow, so awesome.

BTW, is the striped pattern naturally occurring or just something that popped up in captivity and now bred for? They are very cool.

mattkau Aug 25, 2010 12:25 PM

They do occur naturally in nature. They are from Greece usually on the many islands, I think(but I know they occur in Greece). Also, the blotched and striped forms occur together, with the striped trait apparently being dominent. You can get a blotched hatchling from a striped/striped pairing, but you can't get a striped from a blotched/blotched pairing. Someone may want to check me on that. Thanks for the comments.

Can someone please explain the difference between the striped leopards and the tessera cornsnake? Too me they look exactly the same. Am I crazy? BTW, very beautiful snakes.

Big congrats, Matt! They look great!
