Golden corns (update).... painful!

BlueKing Aug 25, 2010 11:02 AM

Well….when it rains it pours!!! Out of my 25 plus years of breeding snakes, this has been my worst year EVER! Everything was going along good with no problems until one day… My AC failed…. No power outage, just an AC failure… All of the corn snake eggs and three clutches of King snake eggs all got cooked… It really is frustrating… It was so frustrating that it took me a month to get over this and finally write about it (today)… This happened in July (during the ONLY day that neither my wife nor my sons were home)… I came home on vacation (from Afghanistan) about a week later and checked on all the eggs (I had told my wife to wait until I got home to see if there may be any survivors). After checking all of the eggs, it turns out that none of them made it (not even the tough-as-nails Cal-king eggs)…. What makes this so frustrating is that this is TWO YEARS in a row of bad fortunes. I was also anticipating some really NICE looking kingsnakes from a couple of nice pairs I had this year….
And to add insult to injury, I lost one of my het females because she had an egg stuck in her for too long and unfortunately my wife/son did not notice in time….

It has been a terrible year, but for some good news: None of my snakes died from this AC failure. Also: Two of my smaller female hets (from 05' and 06') which I had almost given up on, have recently begun to eat like pigs and are putting on some good size. Maybe they'll be ready to breed at least by 2012….
And: My only actual produced pair of golden corns (non-het), are also doing great and may be ready to breed next year….
I have a back-up power source for the house, but I have now also purchased some "Repti-Pro 5000/ Repti - Superhatch" incubators….that not only heat, but also cool in case of any other, future AC failures (anyone of you have those units?)…I hope by now I have reduced the chances of any mishaps to near zero (barring any natural catastrophes)?
I guess this is the price you pay for not being home every night….But this economy of ours and the fact that my family's future is a little more important than my love of snakes, leaves me little choice but to do what I got to do….
It wasn't easy to write about this, but there are some of you that deserve to know, so now you do....
I guess this means that: Don't EVER go to Las Vegas!!!
I do want to say: CONGRATULATIONS to ALL of you that have produced snakes this year! I have seen nothing but good stuff out there! And to those that have not, but tried: I FEEL YOUR PAIN!

Wow Zee!,...so sorry to hear about that bro, what a freakin bummer man!. I have had some bad luck with some clutches myself this year too, but that story tops everything.

I am REAL glad your adults didn't perish in all that, and you have some up and coming ones as well. I am willing to bet next year will be a great year for you buddy!

Hang in there man!

best regards, ~Doug

Thanks.
I'm hoping next year that I can keep Murphy's law to a minimum by having (hopefully) eliminated as many variables as possible.....

Sorry to hear about the bad luck, it would really be nice to see more of your golden corns...starting to wonder if the golden corn is bad luck.

Hopefully you have all your bases covered now and next season brings you great success.

Thanks....
If I do have another bad year....I may just do that.... Maybe that will change the luck overall.....
No wait.....I think man-made global warming is to blame for this!!!
Just kidding!

Thanks...
I'm hoping everything I can possibly control has been covered now!
The only thing I can not control is me possibly not being there once again (for the pairing breeding)... But that would be the very last time. I will be home for good sometime late next year or possibly as early as November this year... We'll have to see... what happens in the next few months while I'm here (in Afghanistan)

damn Zee
That's some tough luck. I didn't loose all of my eggs but I did have a strip of heat tape go bad in one of my racks that basically cooked six keepers from last season including a stripe cream and a motley lavender....not quite as bad as loosing all your eggs but I feel your pain.
I hope things get better and good luck with everything.

Wow...Sorry to hear about your losses too. I had Zenny (Zfelicien) e-mail me a while back, and he's had a crappy year too with his king snakes.....

Man the good thing is you still have your breeders so not all is lost! Man I wish there were something I could say to make you feel better but I know next year will be your year, if we don't become Communists by then, lol.

I still haven't sold that guitar so, it looks like this wouldn't be the best year to sell anything. Thanks Obama!

Yeah...This year has not been to kind to me when it comes to snakes.....
Obama needs to give me some of that bailout money for the Golden corn project, so I can pay for the generator and the incubators - Hey, it's for a good cause, right?

Talk about a Greek tragedy, your luck with golden eggs really can't get any worse.

However it is very good to hear that you are still OK. And I know you will not give up and will try again next year. We will all wish you all the good luck we can.

All the best to you.
