Do bosc monitors need UVB

calebjg Aug 25, 2010 11:46 AM

Ive read differing opinions about this. Some say as long as they have calcium with D3 they dont..I fully intend to house him outdoors in summer but will have to be inside Oct. thru May.Would that be enough sunlight for this animal?

Also would an outdoor enclosure 8x4x4 be big enough? The inside inclosure would be about the same size.

No they don't and they don't need sun lite either. They need good basic husbandry, which in the past and now, is totally avoided by using bandaid fixes.

With proper temps alone, they do not need UV, but thrive with wonderful progress without that.

Of course, once you have the proper conditions, Uv from bulbs or sun does not hurt either. But its not a fix for poor husbandry.

In this pic, the larger albig is two months or so older then the smaller one, the larger is from a first clutch the smaller from a second clutch from the same parents.

The larger was raised with normal lite bulbs and with no additives such as calicum and vitamins. And no added D-3.

The larger individual is perfect in every way and has no bone problems and has increased its skeletal mass many hundreds of times in a few months. Which means its doing fine.

What is very sad is most have all manner of Calicum problems with animals that are NOT growing, or REPRODUCING. Then assign all manner of fixes to a static non progressing animals. The truth is, they are being kept very poorly, its common sense really.

These days these myths are promoted by dealers that would rather sell product then care for the good health of captive varanids.

For instance, I have seen adds showing some big time reptile breeder, backing this UV product or another. The problem was, I know these people and before they were paid to be envolved in the add, they never used the product. Kinda sad really. Cheers

Decided to stop in and see how things are going.
Still have 2 monitors, heck the same 2 Ive had for years now.
Heres one of those monitors kept indoors with no UV light, fed whole animals only. Its been a few years now since last measuring her but she was 6 ft 9 inches then (Im sure shes close now)and around 40lbs give or take.
How have you and the monitors been?
