Need Gopher help... (egg bound?)

abell82 Aug 25, 2010 06:57 PM

How do I tell if my gopher is egg bound? I bought it at the Daytona show. Then the seller pointed out it was probably gravid, and should lay within the next week. The seller will give me no other information.

I really don't care about the eggs, I just want to give the snake the proper care. I have a hide box for her, as well as a large water bowl, but I don't have much experience with pits, and have no idea, when she is actually due to lay. Any help or advice is deeply appreciated.
By the way I called a vet, but they said with not knowing any information...

Provide her with a moist sphagnum moss hide. This one contains my young bulls. Mama snakes really like a moss hide to lay their eggs in. Put a cardboard box over the moss hide for further cover and privacy.

With the lid off. The moist moss helps with shedding, too. Use orchid moss; you can get that at any garden center.

Before she goes to lay her eggs she may act restless as she looks for a place to lay her clutch. The moss lay box makes it easy for her to find the right place.

If you do get a clutch it would be fun to incubate it and see what comes of it.

She is very lethargic, and not staying inside it. I can see a lump at her vent which I assume is an egg. How long should I wait before I become worried?

Sounds like you're already worried. Consider a visit to a vet with some reptile expertise? Nearest zoo might be able to help put you in contact with someone.
