Nicer than kings?

Curiousity Sep 24, 2003 11:23 PM

I have recently caught a cali king...in michigan...and he is nippy nippy nippy. STRIKE STRIKE TAIL RATTLE MEAN lol, of course I'm keeping him but I want to breed an egg laying snake and I found kings aren't for me. I want to experience the laying and hatching of eggs. I have raised a few other species of snakes, ball pythons, boa constrictors, and garter snakes. Corns are gorgeous snakes, i love the wild type pattern, all my current snakes are brown, tan, white or black. No really striking colors. Are they niceer than kings? What type of morphs are available? All help is appreciated!! Thanks for your replies.

There are some nice kings out there and Captive breed ones tend to be tamer. But even some corns mainly when young act nippy but most outgrow that as they get bigger. Also with age they
usually have been handled more and due to size or being handled
they usually are a lot more laid back. I have several several corn snakes and other than very young corns sometimes strike (can not hurt you at that size) I only have 2 or 3 that act like they might strike as yearlings. They spread their head and neck and rattle their tail against something and sometimes make a rattle type noise. Out of all my corns it may be just me but those that are motley or strip tend to be most hyper for me. I have noticed this with stock from 4 or more different breeders. On the positive side one pair of striped and a motley are amoung the best eaters I have.

Just wondering, i am still very interested in corns. Kings are lovely but i like the wild type corns so much lol.

You're just so GIGANTIC to them when they're tiny.

Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

I've never had a problem with boas or python nips, as hatchlings. So getting nipped so young is new to me.

I've got a couple like that, but I work with tiny tiny boas. A hatchling burmese or red tail is already the size of a half grown corn snake.
