Incubator recommendations.

Aaron Aug 26, 2010 10:38 PM

I have been using the same Hova-bator styrofoam incubators for about 10 years. They're good but so old now I keep envisioning them failing at anytime. Can you all give me some recommendations on a good sturdy incubator to buy. I don't want to build one. Sturdy and long lasting are more important than minute accuracy. I just do colubrids so plus or minus one degree is fine, I just want something strong enough that if you bump it it's not going to go out of whack.

You might want to see if there's any consumer reviews of the ReptiBator Digital Egg Incubator. It seems sturdier and more reliable than a Hovabator. I don't have one (though I used to have a Hovabator). The last few years I've made my own incubators.

I picked up one of these this year cause I was in a pinch and though it's built well it doesnt regulate the temps nearly as well as my old stand-by hovabator. I think the reptibator is just too deep, and not having a fan to circulate the air keeps the temps high at the top, giving you a false reading.....

I might try to put in a computer fan and see if that helps.

I'll be building my own next season for sure...

Hope that helps some.

I've been using Natures Spirit incubators for some years now and they've been great. http://www.nsreptiles.com/

I like the deep shelves, and the glass/plexi door. Living down in Florida I don't use incubators but if I did I think those would be worth a try.

I know what you mean by living in FL. I have my thermostat set at 82 in the day and 78 at night. I just did the plastic tub on top of the rack this year and had 100% hatch rate just wish I would've had 0% slugs. I also used that Repashy Super hatch. That stuff works great. I had a couple small holes in the containers and I only had to add water once in the roughly 72 days it took to hatch.
