Lucky Baby

SlytherLyn Aug 27, 2010 07:10 AM

This is my first year breeding balls, only two clutches to get my feet wet.

First clutch was het Caramel x het Caramel and didn't go so great. Only ended up with 3 poss het babies from a 9 egg clutch, there were 3 caramel babies who were too deformed and kinked to survive. The other 3 eggs went bad. Thankfully the 3 poss het babies are doing really good at least.

Second clutch was a dark Dinker African import x her Pastel son. She laid 3 eggs. The eggs were stuck together with two on the bottom and one on the top. The top egg started to dent really bad and right abound day 60 I just couldn't take it anymore and cut it open, something I vowed not to do. As it turns out the liquid inside had started to turn hard and the babies head was stuck in the hard part. He (or she) never could have freed himself on his own and would have died. So it turned out was good thing I did get anxious. I worked at it until I got his head free, but he was still attached to his yolk so needed to stay in the egg.

A couple days later he got impatient and tried to come out, got himself totally covered in pearlite. Was still attached to his egg so I tried to put him back in but it was a losing battle.

I read a post where someone said to tie off the chord with floss if a baby has too much so in a last ditch effort to save this poor little baby I did that. Got him rinsed off and safely away from the pearlite.

He's doing good so far, is alert and active. This all happened last night so I don't know that we are out of the woods yet but I think this lucky little baby has a good chance at least. I'm greatful for whomever posted the floss suggestion in another post as I would not have come up with that idea on my own and don't know what I would have done last night w/out having that information.

Here are a couple pics of the baby. I'll post more once the other two are out of their eggs. I can see them and they both look good, will probably be out sometime over the weekend.

They both look like the one who is out. I think all 3 are Pastels like their Daddy.

Whenever you have an issue like that, it's always better to just pull the egg out and put it in it's own box on a wet paper towel! You don't need the medium any more (it did it's job) and if there are any more eggs/babies in there, they won't interfere w/the distressed baby!

Thanks! I'll try that if it happens again (hopefully it never will). I didn't expect him to come out and once he did and got covered in the pearlite it was just a horrid mess. I was afraid if I started trying to wash him still attached to the egg it could pull too much on the chord and cause him damage. What was left of the yolk that was attached to the inside of the egg was really gross since his egg had started to go bad. It was white and stinky and slimy and just didn't look or smell good at all. I don't think he was receiving any nutrients from it anymore. I checked on him when I got home from work today and he still looks good. Fingers crossed he'll make it after his tough start in life.

Aragog is doing great. He was a mouse eater when I got him but switched over to adult rats with no problem at all. Hopefully my 08 Spider poss het Ghost female will be breeding size this year. She's over 1000 grams and easily would have been over 1500 by now but went off feed the last two months so stopped putting on weight. I'll be pairing him with my POG female as well but she's an 09 so won't be ready until next season.

....If I get a hatchling in an egg and it has to come out.... just cut the egg and pull it and the yolk out , wash it off...and stick it in an eight ounce deli-cup......then put it back into incubator.....cup, shell, both just a small container....sometimes the yolk will get ripped off....I even screwed up and ripped one this year myself by mistake...it was tangled and I pulled the wrong way....I stuck it in cup and it is ok I think.....I forget which one it was?.....too many here...

....so...good luck.....!!!......

Hey, I have 2 yellowbelly babies who have left their egg before absorbing all their yolk. I remembered reading this thread and looked it up. So I am trying your deli cup solution because they both look thin and clearly need the rest of their yolk.

I had moved the whole clutch onto paper towels (still in the egg) after they pipped. When I transferred the 2 to deli cups, I discovered one had gotten the umbilicus wrapped around the body and it was constricted. It took a lot of careful maneuvering but I finally got the tail slipped back through the loop. So I am hoping the deli cup solution will work and they can finish absorbing their yolks (fingers crossed!)

Thanks for the tip!

Followup on the yellowbellies. Well deli cup seemed to work for 1. Today, most of the yolk had been absorbed by the larger baby. But the end of the yolk was discolored and was going bad. So I still tied it off. The 2nd baby that had been constricted by a loop of the umbilicus may have absorbed a bit more yolk, it was hard to tell. But the remaining matter had condensed into a ball and was drying out. It also smelled bad. So I tied it off and removed it. I treated the ends with peroxide and put them into clean deli cups lined with wet paper towels. So far so good but they still look thin to me so I don't think we are out of the woods yet. I've got my fingers crossed.

That is a lucky baby to have someone care so much! Good job!
