Kingsnake breeding size and age

Cheesemonkey Aug 27, 2010 07:57 PM

Hi after just purchasing my hypo brooks female. I would like to know when she will be ready to mate? i.e what size/weight does she need to be and at what age will she be sexually mature?

Thanks alot in advance for any replies.

It's sort of tough to give a certain size or weight really, but if you feed her well, she will definitely be of good size and weight for next year. She is pretty small for an '09 right now, but feed her good and she will have no problems whatsoever for breeding next year. I have gotten brooks gigantic and robust in their first 20 months, and without even pushing them.

well u have seen the pictures of the male he is no older than 2 years i feel more towards 20-22 mnths and he is a huge 450g if not more since last time he was weighed.i have the rest of this year and the whole of next year to get her fattened up she will be going into brumation winter 2011 so she should be a nice size come then.she is a tad small but what can u expect from shop bought all they do is keep them in small tanks and feed them very little.

I have some 09's that I hope to breed this next spring! Like you said we have the rest of this year and a few months into next year before the females become full of eggs and start refusing food.

Oh, I definitely know what you mean about pet shops not feeding them much at all. I went to one recently and saw young adult floridana that were very thin and had their freakin backbone showing. They certainly didn't get that long by not eating anything. It was a simple case of extreme neglect is what it was.

I have had male floridana less that two year old reach upwards of 1250 grams, and females in the 800 gram range well within their second year.

My adult high-yellow brooksi was 54 inches long at just two years old. So they have the potential to get quite large when optimum conditions and husbandry are allowed.

Thanks!,.......

Don't worry though, yours can also grow to be of good robust size too with a decent feeding regimen. It is still very young and will really take-off growing if given the opportunity!
