3rd Times the Charm

I purchase a pair of het for Desert Ghost many years ago from Kim Bell. The first year I bred them I only hatched a couple of normal’s and 3 Caramels Albinos! After talking to Kim we were both mystified. I know for a fact I do not mix hets up as I have a hard and fast rule to NEVER take more then one animal out of a cage at one time. I tried again the following year and produced Caramels again. By this time I was beginning to think I could of had a pair of "hets" that were a product of retained sperm from a prior breeding of the breeder or a simple mix-up by the breeder. I skipped the following years breeding, and then went for it again this year. Kim was always available and if it happened again a third time I felt Kim would probably work something out for me. So this year I hit with 1.1 Desert Ghost which are just beautiful and of course more Caramels! All the Caramels I have produced from this breeding have always looked the same, so I don't think any are a Caramel Desert ghost, but they all are 66% het Desert ghost and the Ghost are 66% het Caramels.

It's been a LONG haul on this project!

Thanks for looking,

John Manser

They obviously sold you some double hets instead of just hets for desert ghost!!! Their mistake - your gain! This is a pic of a pastel caramel desert ghost produced by the Bells. Maybe next season you'll hit the 1 in 16!

Wow, that's a nice looking ball and very encouraging to see the possibilities.

Thanks for the picture.

Wow Cool !
3 times to hit the 1/4 of desert ghost, but 2 times you hit the 1/4 on caramel, hehe.

I hope you kept some of the early offspring to get more possible to test and breed, hoping for a desert ghost caramel.

It's good to know you didn't get ripped or just something went bad.
Even if they didn't want (retained sperm can occur), don't know how they could have get you back. Some desert ghost ? Would that have worth the 3 years breeding the year growing them ?

Well at least it,s going good.
I am also getting worried on retained sperm with some. If you breed recessive to normals, how do you know it's not a retained sperm instead of the new male (recessive) you introduced ?

Very good points. I think there might be a slight risk in buying hets even from well known established breeders. If there ever was a mistake I don't know how a seller/breeder could ever make up for the time invested by the purchaser. I can say I have been doing this a long time, and with any hets I have purchased (boas and balls) I have always had the hets eventually produce.

I think if I ever did have a problem my reaction would be fairly temepered as long as I felt it was an honest mistake.

That really bites!! I've been trying for caramels for years with a 100% het pair and got nothing but normals. You get caramels from het ghosts. Totally not fair!!

Congrats on the bonus caramels.

Thanks. Sorry about your hets. Based on my experience I would say keep trying and good luck with it.
