Here are 2 pics of the 3rd dinker baby who finished absorbing his (or her) yolk and came out of his egg today. Also a photo showing all 3 babies. In the group shot the new baby is at the top. He's darker than the other two. Has some dots but not as many as the special dotty one who is at the bottom in the photo. The 'lucky' baby is in the middle. He's doing well after his rather rough start in life. It's hard to take photos of them since they are all "shiny". Can't wait till they shed and maybe will be easier to get pics then. I took a video of the babies and their parents. A link to the video is under the photos. I'm so happy I had the opportunity to work with this pair my first year breeding balls. It's made this a very exciting and fun start for me.

I'm hoping to keep all of them. Only thing that would stop that would be if all 3 are males, then I'll have to think on it.

I'm going to make some changes to my incubation methods next year as I lost some babies from my first clutch due to the eggs being partly buried in too wet substrate, then almost lost the 'lucky' baby from this clutch because his egg got too dry and the liquid inside hardened up. I really need to nail down how to get the correct humidity so no eggs get too wet or too dry. This year was sure a learning experience for me.

Corns and Kings are SO much easier, their eggs are much more forgiving to humidity issues. Had 100% hatch rate with my two corn clutches this year, ended up with 40 beautiful healthy babies. But my true love are the Balls and I will keep at it until I get the humidity issue perfected so hopefully no more Ball babies will need to be "rescued" from bad eggs...

fool proof use egg crate(get at lowes ,home dept) over per-lite the crate keeps the eggs off the water and the per-lite supports the crate just seal the container all the way up even taping the seams will work.

Thanks! I've seen people post pics using that grate on "feet" with just water under it and was afraid if I didn't cut perfect to size and the baby came out of the egg perhaps it could squeeze though the grate and drown in the water. I like the idea of using the grate on a pearlite base better, it sounds safer then just doing the grate over water. I'll do that for sure next year.

Lucky baby is a male so I won't be keeping him. I'm keeping the super dotty one who is female, and the last one to hatch who is really dark and also has dots and is a male. I can't justify keeping two males. Was hoping for 1.2 instead of 2.1 but at least it wasn't 3.0 so I'm not complaining at all...

I was cleaning tubs today and picked up my 2009 male Pewter (unrelated to the dinker project) and realized he has the same dots down his back as two of my dinker kids have. I googled pewter pics and found many with dots down their backs.

The breeder I got the pair from said the female looked like a Cinny as a baby and that my Pastel male was gray like a pewter as a baby. Having owned two actual Pewters who had no yellow as babies I don't feel that the dinker babies are Pewters as they have yellow. But I do find it interesting that they have the little dots on their backs like Pewters do...

So now the big question is, what do do with her for this upcoming breeding season? Should I breed her back to her son again? Or pair her up with my Pewter male?
