It's not necessary, as in, it won't have any health effects, however, if you want to be able to wear short sleeves and still handle your beardie, i'd say yes. It's really pretty easy to do. I would start as soon as the beardie starts cutting you with the nails, or when they hurt you. Cut only the black part, never the clear.

Yes trimming nails is important, especially if you plan on handling them, they can give some nasty scratches if they protest. This is done by just taking off the end pointed section of the nail. Don't clip to low or you will cut into the vein and your dragon will bleed, they sell clippers and coagulating powder at the pet store, or pharmacy just in case you do go down too far.

I feel that this suficient until adult, then you might want to look into a 4X2 or larger.

My advice would be to put some rough rocks and branches in your lizards cage for basking and climbing. Climbing on rocks regularly should keep your beardie's nails from overgrowing. I've clipped my dragon's nails a few times, for my comfort. It all depends on you really, and if you are willing to tolerate some occasional minor scratching. Clipping isn't necessary but you can do it if you want.

My beardie takes better to clipping than my cats, lol.
