General Substrate and Heating Question

ROC Sep 01, 2010 08:20 PM

Had two questions for everyone. Seems like some do and some don't so wanted to ask these questions:

Do you keep your babies/adults over heat or just at room temp?

Do you keep your hogs on aspen or paper towel/newspaper?
(wondering this from recent discussions on dusty bedding causing respiratory infections)

Thanks all!

Ross

Ross,

I keep anything over 50 grams on sani-chips. Babies are kept on paper towels.

I give all my hognose a hot spot of about 92 or so degrees. The cool side and room temp is around 82.

I keep babies and adults on aspen. All have heat (~92-95F). The babies really like to burrow in the substrate.

Ross I keep babies on paper towels for about 1 week then on to aspen. I keep some on heat tape with a Helix set at 89 degrees and some are not on heat tape. The ones I keep on heat tape I feed every 4-5 days and the ones not on heat every 7 days. I have never had any hogs get a respiratory infection. Maybe I am just lucky buts all the above has worked for me.
