WJTV (Jackson, Mississippi) 25 August 10 Rare Iguana Found on Loading Dock of Ford Plant
Royal Oak, Mich. (AP): The Detroit Zoo says it soon will be showing off a rare iguana species at its campus in Royal Oak.
What's more interesting, though, is how the reptile made its way to Michigan.
The Yucatan spiny-tailed iguana was spotted scurrying across the loading dock at a Ford Motor Co. transmission plant in Sterling Heights on July 29.
It's believed to have been a stowaway in a shipment of auto parts from Mexico.
The reptile only can be found in a 1,200-square-mile range of the Yucatan Peninsula and is one of the smallest iguana species, growing up to a foot long.
After discovering the stowaway, a safety engineer at the Ford plant called animal control. The Detroit Zoological Society was contacted the next day and was asked to provide the iguana with a permanent home.
