BAD BAD BAD IDEA...geoherper

adamjeffery Sep 02, 2010 05:45 PM

well i dont post here much anymore due to numerous reasons. some of you may remember me, i normally dont post this type of stuff but this got my blood going. so please take a moment to read.

i just happened to run across an advertisement for a website called geo herper. i know geo caching is where people travel the world hiding things and leaving coordinates on a website for others to find and re-hide. now this site seems to be more informative, in the regards that you post the coords of where you found a herp.
BAD BAD BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if this site takes off in anyway many many people that would normally not be able to find these animals will have direct access to spots where they are located. many many more spots will be destroyed than have already been.
we as a community need to let these people know that what they are doing is a novel idea that will be used in an inappropriate manor by many people.

please look it up and discuss your thoughts here.
thanks
adam jeffery

Agreed! The idea is nice in a perfect world but it will definatly be a tool that is way too powerful for the wrong people. It will be abused and the animals will suffer. Thumbs Down on this one 100%!!!!!

Agree. I almost sent them something requesting the service be removed but thought better of it because I think very few people will utilize the service. I've been around a LONG time and have a reputation of not bagging the the vast vast majority of wild herps I encounter and people are still reluctant to share their herp spot info with me.

I could give exact coordinates of places where I have found Utah milks, but still no one would likely find them. However, certain meatheads would surely destroy a lot of habitat trying.

I hadn't heard that you found milks. Lets see some pics.
I disagree with you strongly though. Post where you found them and I will give you a 100% guarantee that myself and and at least 5 other local, non-meathead herpers will find them within the first few times of looking. Granted, we won't destroy the habitat, or take the animals home with us, but who knows what others will do once they here about the spot(s). Milks aren't that hard to find, if you know what your doing, so please don't ever post an exact locale on a public forum.
