FL Press: Snake sitter bitten

Sep 03, 2010 05:58 AM

TCPALM (Stuart, Florida) 27 August 10 Sebastian woman bitten by python was taking care of snake for her son (Lamaur Stancil)
Sebastian: The woman bitten by a 12-foot-long albino Burmese python had been caring for the reptile for her son, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The victim, identified Friday as Kim Bradford, told authorities she had been the caretaker of the snake named Banana for about a year, FWC spokeswoman Joy Hill said. Bradford was bitten by Banana on her hand at her home in the 400 block of Tulip Drive Thursday.
FWC officials are investigating whether the nonvenomous python, which was euthanized by Indian River County Animal Control, was registered with the state. As of Friday, Hill said they had found no registration.
Bradford was hospitalized Thursday, but there was no information available about her condition. She could not be reached for comment.
Burmese pythons are listed as a “conditional” reptile by FWC, which prohibited personal ownership of the snakes as of July 1. However, anyone who had a Burmese python licensed by the state prior to that date is permitted to keep it.

I always love it how they like to call us bubba and all the cat and dog crap. if it weren't for the fact that I don't want to have deal with the p.i.t.a. of registering to comment right now I,d show that guy just how much of a mental midget he really is.
If you could even get a 12 foot burm to pay attention to mice how many of them would it take to feed one and how the hell long would it take to feed it? Not to mention that I can't even remember the last time I fed anything live to any of the snakes or monitors. I haven't bred anything lately and feeding pinks to neonates is the extent of the live feeding (oh yeahhhhhh I get a real kick out of it too.)
The funniest thing is my dogs really have a thing for eating rodents and yes I DO get a kick out of that. Several years back my wife and I were cleaning rodent cages and a mouse jumped up on the lip of a bucket and was running around the rim of the bucket. A samoyed I had at the time was watching it run around the rim of the bucket and then just grabbed it and ran off with the mouse who was never seen again. I laughed so hard I almost wet myself. Now days I have a husky shepherd mix that not only actively hunts roof rats that come onto my screen porch but also actively hunts and quite successfully catches birds the venture into my courtyard. I guess my dogs might be a bit more disturbing to that guy than my snakes and monitors.

Many many years ago when I worked at Martin's Aquarium, there was a huge excess of gerbils in the store (mainly due to customers breeding them and then giving them to the store). I was given orders to thin down the gerbils (as it is hard to add new gerbils to established cages without a bloodbath). It took 10 hours and I fed 39 prekilled adult gerbils to a 10 foot burm. I suspect it would have eaten more but my shift for the day was over.

You want to see something real funny, toss a few live mice in with some Chinese box turtles! The most fun you will ever have feeding mice. Predation in its finest hour. You'll bust a gut.VM

I think if you fell in a turtle pen and were unable to get up for some reason the outcome would very surprising and quite horrifying to most people. I suspect turtles would be far more likely to consume an incapacitated person than a snake would.

I commented. Something in the news business formula puts reptile threats at the top of the priority list. It is a new phenomenon.
I sure wish they would get a few more facts on how and why, etc. Not the usual BS facts, but something intelligent for a change.
I'm guessing the snake was probably less than 12 feet long.

Why was the snake killed so quickly??? Couldn't they at least try to find it a home??

I wonder if HSUS or PETA will stage a protest against this.

Gee... I wonder if they would have put down a dog with the same alacrity if it bit its "sitter." How many times have I been bitten by dogs that I didn't own? Several times - and I've never felt the need to kill someone's pet, even if the bite broke the skin. Never been bitten by a snake, mine or otherwise, because I don't feel the need to do anything stupid with them. Honestly, one bite? Not even a squeeze? It's not like the snake mauled her!
