Together or Separate? and.......?

Z_G_Reptiles Sep 03, 2010 08:43 AM

I know with BCI's the majority of people leave the litter together untill they shed, and with Blood Pythons you seperate them, as they often take min of 3 months to shed and won't shed till they start eatting and getting some size. With BRB's I've been seeing they often eat prior to shed but also take a week or so to shed, so it's kinda right in the middle. What works best, leaving them together untill they all shed or separate them, and if so, when?

I also wanted to ask, I know most people use racks, I myself don't own a red YET. My herp room is in the low 80's and around 77 during winter. Would it be ok If I just bought rubbermaids or would it be more stressfull since they dont have to rack to help block the sides and make it feel more like a box then a window?

Thanks
Zack

I'd recommend separating them. This will make it much easier to keep track of which ones are eating, and which ones have shed. Plastic tubs should be fine. I'm keeping my babies in 7 Qt. Sterilite tubs with locking lids.

You can also make an inexpensive DIY rack pretty easy. Basically, you buy a cheap plastic shelf and cut it down to fit your tubs. Run a little heat tape, and you're all set. I can post pictures later of a rack I just built. A 5 story shelf was $36, and after wiring it with heat tape it probably cost around $70 total.

Thanks, I love those tubs, I've used them for my hatchling blood pythons and have never had one get out.

I've always separated my baby BRB's shortly after birth. I do have several baby racks and I keep individual records on each including birth weight, shed and fed dates. Kinda hard to do that with a pile-o-snakes.

I have two 90 slot stacks of the Boaphile rhinorax and love them. My babies thrive in them so I'm quite happy and would not change a thing.

Way back when before getting the first stack I did use loose sterilite boxes with lids. Stacked in a large cage to contain any escapers. Got pretty wild when I had 80 plus babies in them, stacks everywhere. Including any empty cage slot I could find. Old pic with a few in one of my breeding sage slots...

Thanks Dave, They's what I thought but wasn't positive. As for the Boaphile hatchling racks, I'd love to get one of those and almost did last year but ended up buying 2 more snkes instead.
