What kind of glass for sliding doors?

calebjg Sep 03, 2010 10:42 AM

I looked at the double strength and it seems too flimsy(eight inch). Is quarter inch glass going to be strong enough and fit the 1/4 inch track??.I asked the price and glass place said two pieces of 1/4 inch cut approx 30x24 would be 80 dollars.Seems a bit much
I bought the 1/4 x 48 plastic track by Knape and Vogt
When I ordered it I didnt realize it came in 1/8th and 1/4 inch size.
Ive been working on this stupid cage now since January and still havent gotten it done. Now I know why people buy them.

Yes, 1/4" glass will fit in 1/4" track and is plenty heavy enough for sliding glass doors, that price doesn't seem that far off from what I was paying when building mine. I have recently switched to 1/4" plexiglass which can be bought at any Lowe's or Home Depot and is a little cheaper, about 20 times stronger and you don't need to pay a shop to cut it. They sell knives for cutting it in the same section, but all you really need is a utility knife with a fresh blade in it and it does the same job.You really shouldn't ever need anything heavier than that, yes a large snake still has the capability to break it, nothing is fool proof but, if you have a snake that is constantly striking at the glass, you have other problems that need to be addressed.
